For the thirty-seventh time today he wondered why he had decided to attend Veta Community College and prayed that no one would sit next to him. Isaiah stared intently as the minute hand crept ever closer to the half hour mark and the second hand danced lazily in circles. He was so focused on the clock face, he hadn’t even noticed the boy making his way towards Isaiah. So when the boy with silvery-white hair plopped down in the seat next to him, Isaiah was extremely startled. Then, the boy did what Isaiah feared the most--he extended his arm for a handshake. “My name’s Austin,†he said, his hand hanging expectantly in mid-air.
Swallowing his fear and anxiety Isaiah completed the handshake and cringed expectantly. Without looking he knew the spots which ran up and down his arms and were smattered across his face were changing color. Austin’s eyes grew wide as the grey spot turned green, starting at the hand he was holding and creeping upwards. He watched with awe as moments later the green was quickly replaced by orange. Isaiah was just as surprised as Austin was. Usually when people would touch him and witness his bizarre power they would yank their hand back as if they had been shocked.
When Isaiah would try to explain to them that he was sort of like a living mood ring they would stare at him like he was crazy, or worse, like he was a freak. After a few seconds, which felt like a millennia to Isaiah, Austin looked up from Isaiah’s arm with a grin and murmured “cool†quietly. Then, as if nothing unusual had happened Austin launched into a conversation. “So what’s your name and where are you from?†he asked. Isaiah was so startled by his nonchalance that he just stared at Austin for a minute.
“My name’s Isaiah and I’m from Dephi originally,†Isaiah finally responded as he shook off his shock. Before he could help himself he blurted out, “Why aren’t you scared or freaked out or something?†Immediately he wished he hadn’t said anything but Austin broke out in a smile. “I can do weird things too, only with weather†Austin replied slyly. “And I have friends that can do unusual things also. Would you like to see?†Austin asked eagerly. For the first time today Isaiah was glad he had decided to attend Veta Community College.
