Summary:
A German scientist, Alconhof specialises in mechanical organs that rely on cogs and gears. Using state of the art equipment to construct his masterpieces he provides them to the unfortunate members of the public at reasonable prices. Alconhof having been one of these "unfortunate members of society" himself understands the fear and suffering experienced when one may die tomorrow, or the next day, or the next. Alconhof dedicated a lot of his life and money researching and developing the process in which one may create clockwork organs and has kept the research hidden away in a special box. The research is incomplete thus far, but Alconhof may consider releasing it to certain residents of Subeta when it's finally complete. Alconhof's dedication to his work lead him to meet a young, stray Constellation who he took into his arms and cared for. The Constellation now goes by the name Cog and spends most of her time helping Alconhof with his work.
Story:
A stray young Illumis that wandered the streets of the Darkside after his mother died during birth. The youngling was born with a tear in his heart, costing thousands of coins to repair. As a result his father soon abandoned him after a long ship ride from Germany to the mystical land of Subeta. The young Illumis wandered and wandered and wandered until finally wandering into the Sable Smithy's store drenched in sweat and dying from starvation. The Sable Smithy took care of Alconhof as he slowly grew up. The Sable Smithy named the young Illumis Alconhof after a German man he once knew. During the time spent with Sable, Alconhof came to learn many skills, his most important (and best) being the art of clockwork. On various occasions he created dangerous clockwork grenades and other times harmless clockwork watches. After perfecting his method of creating various objects Alconhof spent money and time into researching the science of organ replacements. He was determined to create clockwork organs which could ultimately replace his own heart, and in the future could replace organs of other Subetans. Alconhof's determination in researching the subject lead him to Ziara, the capital of Atebus.
Several years later Alconhof perfected his theory on clockwork organ replacements, and successfully replaced his heart with one a clockwork heart. After the success of his replacement he created clockwork alternatives for countless different organs including the lungs, kidneys and liver. Alconhof became a much-publicized scientist showing up in the local Ziara newspapers and once in the official Subeta newspaper. Business began bustling around his home and he couldn't find a break in his now very busy life to spend time resting. Night and day Alconhof would sit at his antique table with spanners and cogs, metal sheets and oil jars surrounding whatever he was currently working on. The busy schedule made a significant impact on his physical well-being. He would note the occasional morning wake up feeling light headed, he had also passed out in his study twice. Alconhof began to monitor his heart rate and stability, soon realising that the clockwork he designed was slowly failing. It was then that he realised that maintenance was of huge importance to clockwork organs as was the upkeep of real organs. He quickly sought to repairing his heart and as soon as he finished he travelled all around Subeta in order to perform the required maintenance to all of his previous patients.
After arriving home from the several month long maintenance travel Alconhof decided it was time to take a break. It was time to explore the city he lived in and introduce himself to the people living there with him. Alconhof made his way through the many shops and food vendors in the city, peeking in to each one as he passed. One particular store caught his eye - The Steamworks Menagerie. So many objects, so many uses, so much potential. He rummaged through the shop for almost an hour, until finally leaving with nothing new. He'd definitely go back there again. It was on one of his many trips to the store that his prized cogwork key fell out of his pocket onto the floor without his knowledge. From a crack in the building wall near the key a young Constellation scurried out and took it in her grasp with its eyes fixed on Alconhof, who was walking at considerable speed. The Constellation hurried after him. Running as fast as her tiny legs would allow, but unfortunately the Constellation was falling behind. Alconhof turned into the Steamwork Menagerie allowing the Constellation to finally have a chance at catching up to him. Quietly she walked inside the store and approaches Alconhof wearily with the key held above her head. A look of utter surprise appears on Alconhof's face, he snapped his hand into his pocket unable to feel the key.
"Thank you young one, this key is very important to me."
He muttered thankfully as he stroked the Constellations back gently. She nudged her head into Alconhof's leg as a sign of appreciating the gesture. Alconhof carefully took the key from her grasp and replaced it in his pocket, he then gently picked the Constellation up and cradled her in his arms. He walked out of the store with her and made his way to the Atebus shop. Browsing quickly through he picked up a Fruit of Passion Plushie, paying for it as he left. The Constellation made a soft meow-like sound as he placed the stuffed fruit in her lap. The pair then continued on their way back home.
