LRay was not bothered by the heat rolling off the mountain as it smoked and fumed. In fact the heat fueled him, added to the massive cloud of flame and smoke that surrounded his tired body. His bony wings flexed behind him, tired from being held still so long. He could easily fly to the top of the mountain if he wanted but he was searching for something very important. He collected rare rocks and stones, and was on the search for a gem. This gem only came from a smoking mountain and, if the mountain did in fact hold one of the gems, it could be found anywhere along the face of the mountain. He was extremely patient and had a good eye for such things. He found great interest in rare collectibles, but preferred to find them himself rather than buy them. The thrill of a gemstone to him was the hunt, and there was no victory in another man's treasure. His favorite to that point had been a beautiful opal. He'd traveled through a dessert to a deep canyon to find it. He was so tired by the end of his trip to the opal that he'd nearly given up. He remembered the way it felt to dig into the rock with his claws and find the sparkling stone throwing off light like a million tiny rainbows. This trip would be different though. The volcano would spit basalt magma, which contains very little silica, the material that makes up opal, but if the very small amount found its way together in this volcano, there would be fire opal. LRay was very smart and determined. He knew that if he waited until the mountain cooled someone else would come find it. He also knew that he'd spend a year looking for it if he had to. The thrill of a gemstone was the hunt for it, but the purpose of the hunt was a great gemstone.
