Life Excerpt

The others were starting to get irritated with him, and muttering as much below their breaths while he collected his winnings. Angelo wasn't sure how many times he'd won so far. He'd lost interest in counting after the 5th one. He gave them all a charming smile.
-"What's the matter boys? Why so glum?" He readied himself for another round. "Are you gonna deal or not?" He asked the guy that acted as the dealer for this game of poker, Texas Hold-Em style. The others looked at him and then each other. Two of the five guys collected what money they had left and got up from the table. That disappointed Angelo somewhat. He always preferred playing bigger groups of people. It meant bigger risks and bigger payouts when you won.
-"If you'd just stop winning all the time maybe some of us would be smiling too." Said one of his opponents. He was a big guy. And just like the old prejudice about big people he was certainly more than a little daft at times. Well, most of the times. Angelo shrugged, and put on his most innocent looking smile.
-"I can't help it. If I see a window of opportunity staring me right in the face you can bet I'm going to take it." That didn't seem to have had the desired effect. The big guy looked offended. At least he thought that was an offended look. Either that or angry. Maybe both.
-"Are you calling us stupid?" Okay, both it was.
-"Not at all. It's just...well, obviously you didn't see the opportunities that I did. Or you would surely have acted upon them." O-k...that did not go over any better than the other comment. What was with him today? Usually he only needed a few words to weasel himself out of a bad situation like this. He decided that he must be having a bad day. Not a good day to have a bad day on. He smiled to himself at his own wit. He realized a bit too late that smiling probably wasn't the best action to take in his current situation. The table wobbled as the big guy quickly got to his feet. The other two decided that this was probably their queue to leave. He couldn't blame them.
-"Now you're calling us blind and stupid? And you have the balls to smile at me too?" He was looking really pissed off now. This was obviously not going to be solved by words alone. Well, most likely not by words at all. That would come later when he had to find a way out of whatever punishment Jack would throw at them for starting a fight among their own ranks. Angelo put on his most somber and apologetic demeanor as he got up out of his chair.
-"Now let's not be too hasty here. We all know that Jack won't be too happy if we start fighting each other." He held his hands up in front of him hoping it would stave off any attack the big guy might want to throw at him. It didn't seem to have the desired effect though, because no sooner had he finished that sentence then a huge fist came flying straight for his face. Angelo quickly ducked, gathered up most of his winnings and then he was heading towards the nearest door. He could hear the heavy footsteps behind him as well as some curses. As he was running he got his jacket off and bundled his winnings up in it. Rounding a corner he found an almost empty trash can that he dumped it into before hurrying off again. He knew he had to get out of the building to stand any chance of getting away. He was on the 4th floor of this apartment building that the Sky-Walkers had made their own. He decided that the stairwell was his best bet and headed straight for it. He hadn't gone down more than two floors when he crashed into the big guy though. Angelo had been too busy looking up to where he thought this guy would be he hadn't even thought of the possibility of him coming from below. He tried to get away but it was too late. The big guy had a firm grip on Angelo's left arm. It felt like he was going to crush the very bone the way he was squeezing it.
-"Thought you were going to get away did you? Well, it seems I outsmarted you this time, doesn't it?" The air went out of him as the big guy suddenly punched him really hard just below the ribs. Angelo moaned as he tried to steady himself. "Now tell me where you hid the money and I might go easy on you." He grabbed Angelo by the throat with his free hand and lifted his head up so that Angelo was looking him straight in the eye. Angelo was having a hard time breathing.
-"I threw it away." He managed to say and smiled at the big oaf. He realized too late that said oaf didn't like his smiles and that he probably didn't realize that Angelo had actually told him the truth about the money.
-"You must be a sucker for punishment." He let go of Angelo's throat only to start pounding him with punches in his stomach area. After a few of those punches he let go of Angelo's arm so that he could use that hand as well for the punches. Angelo had no idea how long it lasted. To him it felt like forever, but in reality it was probably more like a couple of minutes. All he knew was that when the punches stopped coming Angelo sank to the floor, clutching his stomach. The pain was excruciating. He could feel something in his throat and started coughing. Then there was blood on the floor. After that everything went black.

The pain woke him up. It wasn't as excruciating anymore but it was still pretty bad. He could hear voices and started to open his eyes to find out what was going on. He found himself in a bed, his own bed it would seem. Next to the bed were Rex, Jack and Sebille. He reckoned that Sebille was there for her medical abilities. She and Rex were looking concerned while Jack was simply looking furious. Sebille looked at him then.
-"Oh, he's awake." She said in her usual small voice and as was also the usual thing with her a blush was starting to build up on her cheeks. "Are you feeling ok? Do you need anything?" He nodded and smiled at her.
-"I could do with some pain killers." Her blush built up even quicker then. If it was because of the fact that she hadn't thought of pain killers or because he'd smiled at her, he didn't know. Might have been a combination for all he knew.
-"I'm so sorry, I should have realized..." She fumbled with a small bottle and a syringe before finally injecting him with it.
-"It's ok. This way I had an excuse to talk to you." He winked at her and touched her hand tenderly. She withdrew it quickly and was practically red as a tomato by now. He closed his eyes and sighed with relief as the pain went away.
-"What the hell happened out there!" The words suddenly exploded out of Jack's mouth. He was obviously tired of waiting. Angelo looked at him and then at Rex, making it a point to show that it was Rex he was telling and not Jack.
-"It was a friendly game of poker gone bad." He shrugged. "The big oa-... um I mean he is obviously a sore loser, and decided to take it out on me."
-"Humph, something tells me there's more to this than what you just said." Jack looked at him with fury burning in his eyes, but turned around and left the room instead of acting on it. Angelo was happy with that choice. Rex let out a troubled sigh.
-"Is there anything else to the story?" He looked Angelo in the eye. Rex looked so tired. And sad. It dawned on Angelo then that their beloved leader obviously was in one of his depressed periods right now...
-"Well, I mean..." He let out a big sigh. What the heck. What did he have to lose? So he started telling Rex the whole thing. From the beginning. "So, me and five other guys decided to play a few rounds of poker..."
