My Story...

They took her from me, my love, my night sky. She was my world, and when they took her I made sure they would lose theirs.

We were young, in love. Nut, daughter of Shu and Tefnut, my sister and lover. We were together from the start. It was clear, even then when we were barely able to walk, that our paths would end in love. Yet our father, Shu, had other ideas. He wished to make alliance with Ra, the lord of the sun, by betrothing Nut to him. That was where the tangle began.
On the first of the month they were set to be wed. The roast goose was prepared the night before, the flat Eesh Baladi was stacked in woven baskets painted with the symbol of fertility and long life. Ra, as custom, waited in the west end of our home, while Nut slept on the eastern end. I was stationed in the middle, to make sure the over zealous groom could not enter my sister's chambers during the Long Night, as it was called.

When the house hold went to bed, yawning and chatting wearily but excitedly about the events to come in the morning, was when our plan was brought forth. I waited until the moon was at the equinox of its journey and signaled for Nut to come to the main hall. She came, dressed in her white linen gown, her eyes sparkling like two of the stars. We kissed, her face blushing in excitement, and then made our way to the west end, where Ra was asleep in his room. We worked quickly, sealing the entrance to his room with fresh river clay. Then Nut went back to her end and I to my post, our duty for the evening done.

The next morning the servant was found asleep in my place, clothed to look as I. While I appeared from one of the west rooms, clad in Ra's war gear. A cheer went up from the guests and the families gathered for the wedding. I was whisked out of the house and to the boat waiting on the river, where the ceremony was to be conducted, leaving the bride to her friends and their pots of make up.

An hour later my love came forth, dressed in a resplendent gold dress with a border of the deepest blue. Her hair was braided and beaded in many long rows and her eyes were outlined with the softest coal. She took her place next to me and we shared a small smile, our secret safe within. Or so we thought.

Seconds after the ceremonies were completed, our love sealed, Ra burst forth from his room. But he was too late, for the deed had been done. He stormed and raged, thrashing about and shaking my father, blaming him for planning the treachery.

"No," my glorious Nut and I said in unison, "we are the deceivers." Ra blinked and came over, looking into our eyes and growling slightly.

"You!" he stormed, grabbing me by the neck and picking me up over his head, "will spend your days crawling through the dirt and dust you love so much!" I felt my form shrink, stretch, coil, pressing tighter and tighter on me until I became a snake. A dank brown snake. I looked up at Nut, whos face was one of complete horror.

"And you," he said to Nut, his tone slightly soft, "are forgiven. But you must renounce this idiot."

"I-" Nut began, but our father interrupted.

"You shall be forced to guard the stars, never to touch the earth. I will be your beerier, as service to my King," my father bowed slightly, "if he so wishes."

They believed they had quelled us for good, keeping us dormant, separate. They think they had quenched our love but they are wrong. One day I will see my love again, and they will pay. They will pay.
