An old woman sits alone
and skims wonderingly a
along her face
and wonders where the years
have goneâ€¦

while she waited
and waited
For a man
thatâ€™d never come.
You see,
her young beau
Had gone off to war
eager and excited

To defend his motherland.
Iâ€™ll come back,
he said,
I promiseâ€¦
So, she waited day and night
For news that would never come
Of her beau safe and sound,
and in her arms again.

But, instead she received a telegram
Of tragic news indeed

For you see her beau was gone
In combat, they said.
She had only saw him that once
Right before he went to war

But now sheâ€™d never see himâ€¦
Never see him again.
So, she put on her mourning

But never could forget
The one radiant smile
Right before he had left
And as she mourned
She agedâ€¦
Just a little more each day.

Until she was nothing
but withered skin and bones.
So, she wondered once again
where the years had gone.

But still, she was happy
She could join him once again
but she was old, you see
her hands liver spotted
and her limbs quite achy.

Would he know it was her
in such an old dying body.
But oh, look, you see.
she is young once again

For in death,
all you see
Is who you once were,
and in death she found
peace again.
