Bliain Nua is the spirit of the New Year. She embodies the ideas, knowledge, and atmosphere of the current year. Some years, when the world is a peaceful and just place, she is joyous and helps the Subeta Defense League to keep it that way. In more somber years, she tends to keep to herself. On rare years, when the world has too much evil in it, she sometimes aids those who prefer the world darker.

Because of this unique way of life, she is respected by all creatures, good and evil. In fact, all put aside their differences every New Year's Eve to come together at Nua's mansion and celebrate her birthday as well as the new year. She creates a spectacular show every year that is only upstaged by the show to come next year. However, every celebration strikes the same bittersweet note. At midnight, Nua withdraws to her room, where she passes with the old year. She is immediately reborn, at which point friend and foe raise a glass, then go their separate ways to embrace the dawning of a new year.

- Bliain Nua is functionally immortal during the year. She dies at midnight on New Year's Eve and is immediately reborn for the new year.

- Nua has abilities every year that mirror the main events of the year. For example, during a year of war, she is an excellent fighter; if a new science is discovered, she will be able to manipulate the physics behind it. She also intuitively knows anything discovered during the year.

- Nua can create colorful pyrotechnic bursts - fireworks!
