Graham had been quite the celebrated scholar in his day. An energetic, dedicated student whose passion for history was apparent to everyone he encountered, he graduated with honors from the Chancellor and went on to become a professor at the prestigious university from which he had graduated. Fellow classmates were convinced he would go on to make great contributions to the field, given his talent and youthful enthusiasm.

Age, however, seems to have transformed the ebullient youth into a bitter, cantankerous old man. The lively young professor that had once been an inspiration to aspiring historians had become a peevish grump whose classes students tend to avoid. (While all will agree that Professor Russell is brilliant, his notoriously foul temper makes it impossible for young scholars to appreciate the knowledge he imparts.)

While Graham was a sociable youth who enjoyed the company of others back in his day, he had come to enjoy his solitude and rarely entertained visitors in his cozy and handsomely furnished flat. Few (if any) are close enough to know what has made him so bitter over the years.

Content to continue the routine he had settled into over the past decade (an early cup of Earl Grey to start the day, a brisk walk to the university, a morning and afternoon spent poring over papers and lecturing, an evening spent enjoying good books while nestled in his favourite armchair, an early retirement to bed) until the end of his days, colleagues were shocked to find that he had left his post at the university to accept an offer to accompany a mysterious young man on an even more mysterious expedition. Rumour has it that Graham now spends his time aboard the CS Valiant, a restored research airship, though what business he has with the crew remains unknown.
