Kitsune are believed to possess superior intelligence, long life, and magical powers. They are a type of yōkai, or spiritual entity, and the word kitsune is often translated as fox spirit. However, this does not mean that kitsune are ghosts, nor that they are fundamentally different from regular foxes. Because the word spirit is used to reflect a state of knowledge or enlightenment, all long-lived foxes gain supernatural abilities.
Physically, kitsune are noted for having as many as nine tails. Generally, a greater number of tails indicates an older and more powerful fox; in fact, some folktales say that a fox will only grow additional tails after it has lived 100 years. One, five, seven, and nine tails are the most common numbers in folk stories. When a kitsune gains its ninth tail, its fur becomes white or gold. These nine-tailed foxes gain the abilities to see and hear anything happening anywhere in the world. Other tales attribute them infinite wisdom ( omniscience ).
A kitsune may take on human form, an ability learned when it reaches a certain age—usually 100 years, although some tales say 50. As a common prerequisite for the transformation, the fox must place reeds, a broad leaf, or a skull over its head. Common forms assumed by kitsune include beautiful women, young girls, or elderly men. These shapes are not limited by the fox's age or gender, and a kitsune can duplicate the appearance of a specific person. Foxes are particularly renowned for impersonating beautiful women. Common belief in medieval Japan was that any woman encountered alone, especially at dusk or night, could be a fox.
In some stories, kitsune have difficulty hiding their tails when they take human form; looking for the tail, perhaps when the fox gets drunk or careless, is a common method of discerning the creature's true nature. Variants on the theme have the kitsune retain other foxlike traits, such as a coating of fine hair, a fox-shaped shadow, or a reflection that shows its true form. Kitsune-gao or fox-faced refers to human females who have a narrow face with close-set eyes, thin eyebrows, and high cheekbones. Traditionally, this facial structure is considered attractive, and some tales ascribe it to foxes in human form. Kitsune have a fear and hatred of dogs even while in human form, and some become so rattled by the presence of dogs that they revert to the shape of a fox and flee. She could feel it in the tired way the wind marched dutifully through the air and hear it in the weary sighs of the leaves. Another year was nearing it's end as the world completed it's dance around the sun, and now it was Kitsune Akiko's duty to lay the world to rest. She had always felt, with more than a little hint of pride, that Autumn was the most important of the four seasons. Not that there were any unimportant seasons, of course, at least not since the Dawn of Creation when they had been consumed by the four current, integral seasons charged with keeping the Earth alive. But Autumn had the definite distinction of being the place where the circle joined, the alpha and the omega if she was feeling particularly bold. After all, Spring was certainly the most joyous time, when all was new and young and full of wonder and bright colors and hope for a tomorrow even better than today. And for all of Winter's somber countenance and solemn attire it was this hibernation of the planet that allowed it to awaken into Spring, without Winter's sleep the world would simply fall to it's death. But who was it that brought Earth safely to Winter? Who calmed that unruly Summer down from it's determined shine before it scorched the planet's surface until there was nothing left but ash? It was Autumn. Bearing this in mind and heart, Akiko set out upon her duty, leaving the realms of dreams and half-known realities to again feel the solid ground beneath her feet.
“Rest now.†She whispered, brushing her fingers gently against the tree trunks and releasing gentle shudders from the bark as they obeyed her command, leaves slowly turning from green to red. Her tails swayed freely behind her, conveying the message to the dirt and the grass and through the air as well, letting the world know it was time to relax and release itself to the powers that guided it. Even the creatures around her, stirred by the heart they share with nature, began to lay down and shut their eyes. The world was quieting.
Well, almost. As the sounds of life began to fade away, one noise stayed steady and strong. Akiko perked her ears towards it, it sounded like bird song. Abandoning her usual path, she walked towards the source of the noise, what appeared to be a bright red bird flitting merrily through the tree tops and singing as though there was no tomorrow which, she realized, might be true for this particular bird.
Firues were Summer's creatures. Birds that appeared only for a brief time near the end of their season before disappearing with Summer to the safety of the season's realm. They were birds of spit and fire, and if left on Earth, would perish once Winter's unforgiving hand swept across the planet. This one must have been separated from its brethren upon Summer's retreat and would now face the consequences of it's folly. Akiko sighed, holding out her hand and letting loose a shrill whistle that matched the Firue's song. It stopped singing momentarily to swoop down and land on her, greeting her with a few short notes and a tuft of flame. A welcome.
“I suppose I'd better take you with me.†She murmured, bringing the bird closer to her face, “lest Summer get mad one of his precious pets died.â€
The bird sang it's agreement.
“Come along then, we have work to do...Kokoro.†It seemed a fitting name, and the bird voiced no objections. Akiko smiled, if Summer expected this one back, he was sorely mistaken.[/i]
