Horses in Celtic mythology
The importance of horses in Celtic people is primordial. It's proven as much by the existence of mythological tales as by archeological findings in relation with the animal, notably tombs and tumulus. It's quite interesting, as in the meantime greco-romans and other mediterranean people were mostly making bulls sacred instead of horses
In the Celtic mythology, horses are mostly associated to Epona, Rhiannon and Macha, three goddesses of which he is an attribute. They are found next to epic heroes such as Cuchulainn, and in numerous later legends that myths influenced. Horses are a symbol of noblesse, are mostly used for hunting and war. They are mostly linked to water, as shown in the tale of Oisin or the mount of Manannan Mac Lir, but they are sometimes associated to the Sun and the Moon. Historical findings are proof of his status of psychopomp, symbol of fecundity and chtonian animal during Irish sacrament rites.
Horses in Norse mythology
Horses have an important role in Norse mythology, not only in the Eddas but also in the sagas, in which they are always named, whether they belong to heroes or enemies. Horses don't have a simple role of mount or vehicle, they are tightly associated to the cosmogony of the ancients germano-scandinavian people, and have deep symbolism of shamanistic origin. Horses are the ones who carry the dead to Valhalla as psychopomp, they pull the chariot of the Sun as well as the one of the Moon, and their mane lighten the world. They are linked to numerous vital elements such as light, air, water and fire.
