Felix could hear his mother�s words as he ran. They echoed in his head. She had warned him not to go into the forest, to stay on the path. The forest was dangerous. This is where the monsters dwelled, the Soul Takers. But Felix didn�t heed her warning. No, he was too stupid, too sure of himself for that. What did she know? She had never traveled more than five miles from their home. She was afraid of everything and everyone. He had a delivery to make on the other side of the woods and the path would take two days. He could be there by morning if he cut through at the river. But the moment he laid eyes on the beasts he had instantly regretted his decision. Their boney arms were devoid of flesh and muscle and any faces they might have had were hidden by the rotting shrouds that hung about their bones and over their heads. They had noticed the stranger immediately and descended upon him with frightening speed. Felix didn�t have time to run before one of the monsters had ripped into him leaving a deep gash that ran from the top of his ribcage to his left hip. At this, the frenzy only intensified. It felt as if a hundred brittle hands were clawing at him, a hundred bodies crushing him. He was not quite sure how but he had managed to crawl out of the pile of boney grasping creatures on top of him and back into the woods.

He had been running as fast as he could for some time before he realized that the monsters had not given chase. They were vicious but also, it seemed, quite stupid. His relief was short lived, however, as he realized that not only was he bleeding badly, but he was also terribly lost. The pain in his side was so bad that he could not believe he had been able to move so fast. As it was now, he could barely walk and the trees were beginning to move around him. Before too long he would lose consciousness and all would be lost. It was then that he saw the light.

It was small at first. A dim glowing in the distance, but as he limped forward it grew brighter. It was fire, dancing on the walls of a cave up ahead but it seemed to be blue. Felix stumbled further through overgrowth hoping that someone inside could save him. At the very least he would not die alone in this forbidding place. He reached the mouth of the cave and peered inside, but he found no fire. The only thing he could see was a little table against the far wall. When he went to the table he found a grisly scene. There was yellow bird sprawled across the top, its wings broken and a deep puncture would in its neck. Felix barely had time to feel sick when he saw something move out of the corner of his eye. He turned his head then and saw it, although it did not seem to notice him. It reached the table and with one boney hand picked up the poor dead thing. He was in the home of a Soul Taker. The beast brought the bird closer to him and then turned his back to Felix. The cave exploded with blinding blue light. When he could see again the monster was standing above him. The blood of the dead bird was still dripping down his skeletal claws. He was sure now that he would die, but maybe it would be quick. Just then he heard a whistle, a yellow bird jumped off of the table and flitted over to a wooden shelf hanging on another wall. Felix examined the shelf in the still dimming blue light the creature had made. There were more than a dozen little beings milling about. Some glowing or buzzing or spinning around. Then he looked up and saw that there were even more shelves. They rose all the way up the wall of the cave and there were hundreds of animals and toys and even rocks that were moving, brimming with life. The monster remained motionless for a moment. He seemed to be peering down at Felix, although he could not be sure as the beast seemed to lack eyes. Felix�s vision was worsening and the pain in his side had become almost intolerable. The monster raised his hand and turned his palm skyward. A blue ball of light burst forth and danced on his boney fingers. As the cave began to fade away Felix knew he would be alright. This Soul Taker, this dreaded killer, would save his life.
