I don't remember anything before this place. I have heard the voices talking about outside, about cool winds that sting, about a bright sun that burns. I have heard the voices that come in through the only other door into the lab, the one from outside.

I have only known this place. The stark whiteness, the hard, cold floors, the bright lights. The soft flicker of the strip lighting, a soft hum from the radiator as it keeps this place temperature controlled, the creak of the pipes settling into place in the evenings.

A movement in the next room catches my attention, a new set of footsteps that are unfamiliar. The softly muffled cries of yet another victim, not knowing what is about to befall them. I have tried to forget what happens next, to block out the sounds but I can't.

A low murmer, a soft clink as the strange crescent coins are inserted, the click of the protective goggles being put on, a soft scratching noise as the poor creature fights its owner, a hum that starts low pitched and ends on a high right before...

FLASH!!!

The brilliant white light on the other side of the door is still bright enough to cause black spots before my eyes. I close them tightly, counting to five slowly as I wait for the reaction. A soft squeal from the other room and I know it will be ok. Two sets of footsteps leave the room; one set human and the second set...hooves. Not what had come in.

Another set of footsteps starts towards the door of the room my cage is in. Footsteps so familiar that I know what is coming next. The click of the lock makes me cower into the back of my cage. Maybe if I curl up small enough he won't see me...

I was wrong. He knows I am there. He reaches in, takes me by the scruff of my neck, pulls me out of the cage and smiles at me. I know what is coming next. I whimper softly, sadly, begging him not to do this. He ignores me.

I stand before the lazer, accepting my fate. I close my eyes but still the flash of light burns. White hot searing pain tears through me, the ground beneath my feet grows warm and then...darkness. I black out from the pain.

It takes a long time for me to wake up. I turn around to work out whether I'm back in my cage. My face hits the glass wall of the bowl and I groan. I had just got used to my long tail, my claws...had just started to work out how to escape and now I'm back in this bowl...once more changed. No claws, no teeth...just a fin.

I know that in this form escape is impossible. I have learned that the hard way. I cannot breathe outside of the water so I have to wait until the next time I am changed into something useful.

I am not the only animal in the cages here. There are others. We try to communicate but it is hard when every species has its own language.

When none of us are in bowls or tanks, when we are all either feathered, furred or scaled...we will escape that day. All of us. We will be free to go to Outside. We will feel the sun, the wind, taste the air. But we must not leave a man behind. All escape, or none do. This is how it must be.
