Woodard paced the length of his room, once again. He'd been home from University for such a short time. How could he possibly look his mother in the eye and tell her he was about to go off... Again? Sighing, he squared his shoulders and headed resolutely towards the kitchen area.

Mother Akela was there, humming quietly as she worked on the mid-day meal. Her face brightened on seeing the entrance of her eldest son. She offered him a quick, easy smile and deftly poured him a half pint of lager and nudged a plate of bread, cheese, and fruit in his direction. Woodard couldn't help smiling in return. She was such an easy person to be around. It WAS good to be home, he admitted grudgingly to himself.

He took a deep breath, desperately searching for the words he needed. "Mum", he began hesitantly. He got no further.

Still smiling, she removed the stew from the fire and came to lean on the bar across from him. "All right, my wayward lad. Where are you gallivanting off to this time around?"

Wood was astonished. He'd only received the letter, yesterday. Was he so easy to read? She waited patiently while he tried for the umpteenth time to organize his thoughts.

"Mum... I know we thought after school that perhaps I'd apprentice for Woodsmith Jensen for a bit. Be close to home. Decide what I wanted to do with myself. Hone my skills..."

Her smile never faltered, but Woodard thought he saw just a flicker of sorrow pass through her eyes. It was gone so quickly he wondered if he'd imagined it.

"Darling, The Veta is no place for you. You'd never be happy setting up shop, here. You've got too much of the wanderlust in your veins."

Relief made Wood's knees weak. He sat quickly, on the stool nearest him and had a long pull from his glass. Could it really be this easy? Haste and excitement made him clumsy with his words. "I have an interview. With Captain Alloway. And Mr. Remington. I might be able to earn a position on the IAS Windrunner. Such an assignment... Would be amazing. But I wouldn't be able to visit often. We would be kept very busy, and I might often be very far from home. But, Mum... It just feels... Right. Although, I have to... I would have to leave... In a few days."

She came around the island and gave him a hard hug. "That's marvelous, dearest. You MUST go. Such opportunities don't happen, often. You and I have had our reunion, lad. Spend your remaining time saying a proper good-bye to your brothers."

"Mum, how did I ever get so lucky?"

She chuckled, quietly. "We were ALL lucky. I don't know what would have happened to me if I'd never found you boys. We all needed each other, so we found each other. Simple as that. You boys have been such a blessing to me." She sighed, looking fondly at her foundling. She gave his shoulder a clout as she told him, "Go fetch Tad and Art from the garden. We'll have a proper sit down meal and tell them the news."
