This is the story about an old man, known as the Snowman for he was a man who loved the snow.

The old man lived in the outskirts of a small village. Due to its location and climate, it snowed once about every hundred years. When it did snow, the village would be blanketed by a layer of diamond dust, and ice crystals would lightly spiral down from the sky. Since snowfall was very rare and pure, villagers believed the flakes were angels visiting the Earth from heaven. When the snow disappeared overnight, they said the angels returned to the sky.

The first snowfall of the century occurred when the Snowman was age three. The young child had never experienced anything as beautiful as the snowfall before. He was amazed by the white blanket snow and spent the day frolicking outside. The snow disappeared overnight, as well as his happiness. Where flakes had fallen the previous day, his tears fell in their place.

As the years passed by, the young boy looked forward to the winter in hopes of watching the diamond dust fall again. Every night, the Snowman prayed and wished to see snow again. He would dream of the falling snow. Every morning, he would jump and look out the window, and every morning, his heart would fall.

Years became decades of snow-less winters. As the boy aged and lived out his life, his memory began failing him. However, the memory of his first snowfall remained imprinted on his mind. To relive it again was his dream.

It was a frosty winter day many decades later. The boy had grown into an old man. His hair was as white as pure snow. His limbs were failing him and his ailments grew worse with each passing year. He knew every breath he drew could be his last. He suffered from many aches and pains, but none as great as the one in his heart. His final wish before he died was to witness the snow fall again. He feared he would pass before that day came. All he wanted was to experience the magic of snowfall once again.

The fragile man sat in a rocking chair in front of his house, the usual thing he would do each winter. A tall dark, cloaked figure appeared by him: Death. At the sight of Death, the man felt no fear, only remorse. He sighed, his feeble breath visible in the cold air.

"Old man, your time has come to an end. You must come with me." Death spoke to the old man.

The old man feebly shook his head. "Please, not yet. I am waiting for an old friend of mine."

"Who is your friend you are waiting for?" Death asked.

"I want to see the snow fall one last time before I die. I have yearned for it since childhood. That is my last wish. Please..." the old man's voice grew weak.

Death shook his head. "I cannot fulfill promises, nor can I keep wishes. Your time has come. Now, you must come with me."

Saddened, the old man's spirit departed from his body and joined Death.

Shortly after the old spirit left, snowflakes began falling from the sky. Carried by the gentle breeze, they spiraled merrily down to the earth and kissed the soft ground again for the first time in many decades. If the old man was still alive, it looked as if he had drifted off into a peaceful slumber as the flakes gently fell upon him. Snow continued to fall. As it did, it blanketed the old man's corpse. From a distance, it appeared as if someone had skillfully sculpted a snowman in a rocking chair in front of the old man's house.

As usual the next day, the snow melted away, but the old man's body was never found. It was as if his physical form had evaporated with the snow and had gone to the heavens to join his soul.
