A light flickers past your lens, too quick for capture. That was the third time this night, tenth this week. The apparition is becoming more...confident around you. You know it's the same one. Always the eerie green glow. The others of your team have captured shadows, strange noises -- but that's basic ghost hunting. Rookie skills. If you could just get an image of this glow, you're sure to get an award of proving spirits exist! Overconfident of yourself, or perhaps selfish, you have kept this information to yourself. Nobody of your team has seen this glow. Aokigahara - or 'Suicide Forest' - is cold. You can see your breath, along with familiar goosebumps that have nothing to do with the temperature. There is definite unease among your little squad, four in all including yourself. Aokigahara is a hot-spot for haunting and is associated with rich Japanese mythology, often demons and death. But that isn't the only reason. The deep forest on the base of Mount Fuji, complete with caves and abandoned shrines, has a high rate of suicides, hence it's nickname. People often come here to commit such an act, and your team has passed signs in both English and Japanese to warn people traveling the forest to 'rethink their actions'. Until the 19th century, ubasute was practiced in this forest - the act of carrying an elder into a desolate place and leaving them to die - even if historians believe ubasute to be folklore. The custom is still strong in people's minds. People think spirits are angry by past actions.
One of your team signals you, sadly joking that he hopes "we don't run into some poor smuck having offed himself". You agreed. The past week has been quiet. Only the park ranger ran into the team, checking to see that no funny business was going on. The forest was large but there didn't seem to be anybody else in here. Lucky. Nobody to interrupt your investigation. Out of the corner of your eye, that eerie glow snaps you from previous thought.

There it was again! You turn, your team mate starts at the sudden action, and run off after it. This time you'll get your picture. Maybe even audio and visual! There is a call behind. You don't hear. "There's nothing there!" Aokigahara swallows you, embracing the newest member of darkness.

Immediate realization of going off alone doesn't startle you. Even the thought of this apparition maybe leading you away doesn't. Too proud, too stupid, too late. You wander for what seems like hours. You don't know. Your watch stopped working. The glow is never out of your sight. Must be going crazy you think or is that thing laughing at me? The echoes of high-pitched cackling seem to come from the glow, but not actually coming from it. They are all around you, driving you mad for the usual silence of the forest.
"Lost?" You turn, seeing a tall man standing confidently. His presence is welcome. He seems to radiate light similar to the apparition but maybe you're just glad to see somebody. The stranger totally ignores the eerie glow a few feet away, instead focusing on you as if you were the most interesting person in the world. You nod frantically at his remark, and he smiles. "That's what I thought. I wondered... why, you see, would somebody run amok this place in the middle of the night if not to..." he breaks off, studying you closely. Asking what's wrong, he continues; "Hehe!" his laughter is high-pitched, feral. "not going to off yourself? Startled, you assure him not.

"For you fleas too, the night must be long, it must be lonely" he muttered.
