Newitt was confused, at first. The place looked very much like an old English study, dimly lit, but just the same. Light came from a single candle on the desk, and any outlying details were lost in shadow, though the smell of leather and old paper brought the sensation clearly into his mind. He doubted, though, that this was any such thing.
He stepped into the light of the candle and looked down at the documents the man was shuffling through.
There was a silence between them, though now the man was undoubtedly aware of Newitt. He stopped observing his papers and lifting his eye, thinning his lips.
"Have you no concern for other people's privacy?" the man said, and his voice was deep in a growl that did not sound human.
"Perhaps you should not leave your door unlocked," Newitt countered, though he did not feel brave. "Or tell secrets to those who do not keep them."
The man reached across the desk and smacked Newitt with the back of his hand, with such force that Newitt fell to the ground.
Newitt lay there, but did not grasp his jaw or wince with the pain. He did not want to show it. A man might have been unaware of the strength he possessed, and might not have realized the degree of pain he could have caused. But this was no man, and Newitt had felt it in that one instant.
