Oh, how the world is filled with light. Some rejoice and dance in its warmth, while others shy away, too timid to reach forward. Life is a rainbow of personalities, each color blended together to create a beautiful mural of near perfection. We're each a bit different, yet we're all alike in one aspect - we share this earth as our home, and we are all neighbors to each other.

With that in mind, it is devastating to know that some see only the black and the white.

I want to change that.

I was once the kind of person I pity. My thoughts were monochromatic, my mind too clouded by greed and impatience to look beyond the horizon. What was material had more value to me than what was intangible; my teachings spoke otherwise, but I was young and naive.

Long ago I trained to follow the path of a monk, something that was a family tradition. My brother and I frequently studied magic together in our spare time, spending our days at his temple from morning to night. It was a simplistic lifestyle, but as long as I had Myouren to keep me company, I was content.

He was a wise, quiet fellow, always soft-spoken in his words. His choices were always made with others in mind - everything had to go to the benefit of friends, family, or complete strangers, for he was too generous and open-minded to focus on himself. The magic he used was a concentrate of pure good will, and his favorite hobby was healing wounded folks with his talents. I admired him greatly, as he was the only real hero I knew.

When he died, I suddenly felt an overwhelming sense of insecurity. He was a beautiful person with a beautiful soul. I asked myself, "how could somebody so selfless as he succumb to his own enemy?".

It seemed as though the world had closed in on me, and I began to grow more introverted with every passing second. I had trapped myself inside my own insecurity, and with nowhere else to go, I looked to myself for a solution...

I feared death. I feared losing everything I had. In my self-righteousness, I concluded that the answer was to ultimately remove the chance of death.

When I finally gained eternal youth, I truly lost myself.

With my new-found abilities, I masqueraded as a savior. I knew arcane magic, I could bring good fortune, I couldn't die. I was a hero, just like my brother, yet I didn't understand the difference between my acts and his. He worked to save people from their sins, while I unknowingly committed them. I only saw the good and the bad, and I worked to vanquish whatever evil came before me. I only had one perspective. I was always right, in my eyes, and because of that I never stopped to look around myself.

The only thing that mattered was me.

As I grew older, the bars of my cage seemed to melt away. I had been deceiving others for years, out of my own selfishness, mistreating others for the sake of my well-being. When I realized my own faults, when my eyes opened, I began to change. What had I been doing with my existence? What had I done to society? Wasn't this the very sin my brother battled every day of his life? I was a liar, a fool. I hurt people, and I did it for no other reason than to save myself.

Myouren loved everybody, and I only loved myself. Now that he was gone, wasn't it my duty to follow in his footsteps?

I transformed myself. I wanted to turn things around, I wanted to fix the problems I had created and eradicate the feelings of fear and doubt. If we could love and accept one another, much like my brother had taught, the entire world would finally be saved. It seemed like a magical idea, and, for once in my life, I finally understood.

When my ideals were rejected, for the same reason I sought a prolonged life, I only drove myself to struggle further in my endeavors. I began to scare people; I was different. What had happened to me, the enemy of evil and the savior to all? The longer I preached, the more they lost their faith. The people that I cared about now started to turn away.

I was no longer their hero. I was the monster.

They locked me away, out of the same greed that had stolen my heart.

When I was freed a thousand years later, I gathered the few followers whom had remained loyal, and started my journey once again. There was nothing else I could do, after all; the devotion I felt towards my goal was just as strong, left completely untouched by my time in isolation...

I will redeem myself. I will honor my brother's wishes, I will change everything.

If it means leaving my few precious friends, forgetting my memories, abandoning my faith, losing my consciousness, giving my soul...

For a world in which there exists a spectrum of individuals, each united by the underlying concept of equality, each free from the terrors of greed and self-righteousness.

For a place that is truly a paradise... I will sacrifice it all.

The world saved me, and now I will save the world. And, until then, I will walk alone.

Byakuren Hijiri is a supernatural human from the world of Gensokyo, a mysterious place that exists parallel to the world of humans. Once a human herself, she spent the majority of her adolescence and young-adulthood as a Buddhist monk, studying and working with her brother, Myouren. Though they specialized in a lighter, more natural kind of magic, when Myouren succumbed to illness, Byakuren started to worry about her own mortality. As a result, she taught herself dark magic, in an attempt to preserve herself. Though it worked just as she had hoped, she had twisted her own essence to the point at which she was no longer a true human. Feared by other humans for her unnatural longevity and abilities, she was sealed away in the underworld, never to be seen by the likes of natural creatures again.

Her imprisonment, though lengthy, did not last. After a thousand years or more of waiting, she was saved by the very humanoid-youkai companions she had protected during her career as a dark magician. With her new-found freedom she built a new Buddhist temple, named after her brother, and she currently spends her days working to create a universe in which humans and non-humans can live peacefully.

She figures that, after centuries of self-absorption and corruption, it's her time to finally give back to the world.
