Basic information

Full name: 'Loon'
Gender: Male
Age: Appears to be in his mid 20s
Height: 6'2"
Species: Engkanto
Occupation: 'Witchdoctor'

Appearance

Despite his tall and lanky frame, his movements seem slow and fluid. His eyes are a bright cerulean blue and are mostly covered by his blond hair. He has a prominent chin and rather big lips for a boy. He always smells of tropical rain and tamarind. He usually wears green, brown, blue or black. He can't touch gold and has a strange fascination with silver and the moon, so much that he named himself after the French word for moon, even though he spells it as the species of bird. He always wears one jade and one incense wood bracelet around his right wrist.

Personality

Since he's been confined to a city (which means being surrounded by metals toxic to him) he's been less calm and more anxious and slightly insane. When nervous he scratches at his arms until he bleeds clear, amber blood, much like tree sap. He loves being around people, but inspiring any sort of amorous feelings in his is dangerous. An engkanto in love can't control his chaotic powers and Loon is no exception. People around him and even the object of his desires will often catch strange viruses or get raging fevers while their skin painfully flakes off in sheets. Because of this, he tries to be cold and grumpy, but it doesn't always work.

The Details

Loon is obviously not from here. His origin (not his birth) is traced back to the Philippines several centuries ago. He himself is a relatively young tamarind tree spirit, or Engkanto. The tree he protected was by the edge of a slowly growing village, and though most of his brethren enjoyed plaguing the locals with illness and hunger, he did his best to ensure their prosperity, by drawing rain clouds and coaxing new sprouts out of the wet earth. Despite this, he was apathetic to the growing population and saw their fickle, daily life drama as trivial and beneath him, until he saw the girl.

She came to pick some tamarind pods from his tree, but he couldn't come near her because of the gold chain she wore around her neck. Distressed, caused a plague to run rampant in the village, worse than all the other engkantos put together. Scores of people died, and offerings of food were placed by the larger trees surrounding the village while the people wailed and lamented their dead. But the girl came by his tree in the dead of night, without her gold necklace and slashed at the trunk of the tree with a heavy machete and cursed it and him in a fierce whisper. "My entire family is dead. I'm going to America."

He appeared to her then, in his lanky form and jewel eyes and fair hair, and what happened next is a mystery to all but him. He was carried over in her mind to the new land and took root. He was weak without the offerings and beliefs of the people, but the girl sustained him with her hatred and grudging acceptance. She was murdered one night, her body dumped in a ditch, and he took her spilled blood as a final offering. From then on, he's had a physical body and has been 'helping' people and fae from the Unseelie court by crafting potions and weaving spells.
