The sun weakly filters through the dark curtains as an exuberant voice fills the house.

“Kids! Wake up! We’ve got work to do!”

Groaning, they rolled over and checked the date on the calendar: December 1st. Of course.

“It’s time to DECORATE!”

Holiday music started up in the living room and mom began singing along in her off-key cheery voice. The kids rolled their eyes as customary but sang along under their breath as they pulled box upon box from the closet and began the day long task of decorating the house.

Mom bustles around handing out lights, fake snow, garlands, stocking, and breakfast sandwiches to all the kids. Knowing the tradition at this point, they start hanging it up around the house. The older kids tacking the lights up high while the young ones tape garland around tables, dressers, and every corner they can. Each kid hung their own stockings over the fireplace as was customary.

With squeals and merriment, they all continued decorating the house. Soon it was time for mom’s special snow village. She carefully unpacked each village house, all a gift from her loved ones. A new one every holiday season. Her eldest kids gentled placed the houses on wide partition that separated the kitchen from the living room. The village was at the point that it nearly didn’t fit. The younger kids dictated where each house lived this year in the ever-evolving snow village. Because you CAN’T have the grooming parlor next to the candy shack. Mom watched on with a warm glow to her smile, even when the cat jumped up to become to village monster.

“Alright, kiddos! Get your snow gear on. It’s time to decorate the outside!”

Cries of joy echoed throughout the house and all the children scrambled to their rooms to shove themselves in coats and scarves before tumbling outside. They immediately began throwing snow at each other. Mom only laughed and joined in the revelry.

After freezing themselves into exhaustion, they all tumbled inside for hot cocoa and cookies.

Then it was everyone’s favorite part. Mom proudly brought out the large pine tree they used every year, and the children sprang forth with strings of lights or garlands and boxes of ornaments. There was no rhyme or reason to their tree’s decorations, and that’s just how mom preferred it. A labor of love looks better than photographic perfection.“It’s beautiful, babies. Let’s get it turned on!”

Mom plugged in the strands of lights and the tree lit up as a bright holiday beacon of warmth and love. All the kids squealed in glee.

Looking around, the house is filled to the brim with holiday cheer.

The moon rises high in the sky as mom ushers her children to bed.

“Santa won’t come if you’re still awake. Off to bed!”

The kids moan in dismay but follow the order. They sleepily drift off to sleep, dreaming of the morning when below the tree will magically be filled with presents just for them.As the children sleep, mom gentle shuts her own door and pulls boxes and wrapping paper from her closet. Some last-minute shopping has her burning the midnight oil, but she can just image the smiles tomorrow when they open the presents.

The sun was just starting to peak over the horizon when excited voices began chiming out the door.

“Mom! Wake up! It’s time! Santa came last night!”

With a tired smile, mom rolls over and sees the big red circle on her calendar. December 25th. The best day of the year. She flung open the door to the faces of her excited children. Even her eldest children couldn’t hide the excitement that this day always brings.

“Who wants to be Santa’s helper?” She calls out whiling holding up the red fluffy hat.

Her youngest claims it this year and begins passing out the presents. All the kids squirm in their seats in anticipation but wait for everyone to get their small stacks of gifts before ripping into the paper and causing a storm of wrapping and bows.

Mom sits back and watches as each of her dearest children open the presents she picked out just for them. This is the moment she loves. The pure joy on their faces. The cries of happiness. The squeals of delight. The warmth of having her family surrounding her. The one time of the year when they all come together to celebrate.

The sun streams through the window, bright and cheerful as an alarm rings obnoxiously.

A muffled groan from under the blankets before a hand swings out to silence the machine. It flashes 12/25 9:00am.

With a sign, the figure swings itself up in bed. An arm extends and picks up an old picture frame on the dresser. A happy family around a brightly lit tree smiles back at the sleepy person.

"Merry Christmas, mom." The voice mumbles into the silence. "I miss you."
