I Want To Be Special!

There was nothing more irritating to Tammyâ€™s ears than the word â€˜ordinary.â€™ Ever since the day she was born, Tammy has always been just ordinary. She was the 15th child of her family, and was often forgotten by her family, especially during dinner time when food was scarce. Never considered intelligent, gifted, beautiful, or any other exceptional qualities, Tammy blended perfectly into the background. Whenever someone mentioned her name, all the Popokos would always say, â€œOh, Tammy? Who is that?â€ All in all, Tammy was just simply not memorable in her community.

This wasnâ€™t for lack of effort; Tammy tried many things to standout. She tried to be beautiful, decorating herself with ribbons and shiny jewelries (scraps of semi-shiny metals people threw out or accidentally left behind in Peka Glade); she attempted to be intelligent, learning all there was to learn about the world; she strived to be athletic, aiming to break the Popoko jumping records in Peka Glade. Sadly, in all of these, she failed miserably. Once, she almost tripped over her ribbons and fell down from the treetops; another time, she missed her favorite meal because she was studying all night and forgot to sleep; and there was also the time she almost drowned in the lake while trying to jump a distance impossible even for the most athletic Popoko. All in all, Tammy was just simply too ordinary. Well, that is, until Tammy discovered her special abilityâ€¦

It was sometime during the summer, while playing with the other Popoko in Peka Glade, that Tammy discovered she was somehow immune to the effect of poison ivy. Of course, Tammy was beyond ecstatic! It meant she was no longer ordinary! After giving it some serious thought, Tammy decided to announce her special â€˜powerâ€™ to world, and what better way to do so than by wearing poison ivy on her fur wherever she went? And so, Tammy started to gather all the poison ivy she could find and made them into her personal pins, necklaces, and bracelets! Her plan worked extremely well. Within a day or two, along with a massive poison ivy rash breakout in the community, all of the Popoko in Peka Glade had become aware of Tammyâ€™s strange power. The Popokos were not happy about it, however, and they told Tammy that either she had to abandon all the poison ivy, or she would no longer be welcome to live with them! â€œHow else am I supposed to show off my unique ability?â€ Tammy asked.

In the end, rather than risk a life doomed to ordinari-ness, Tammy decided to leave with her poison ivy. She packed all of her belongings into her favorite and only suitcase (which was a hand-me-down old lime-flavored leaf bag from her older sister) and set out into the depths of the forest. Never again would she be called ordinary. Somewhere along the way, she met a strange forest spirit named Peka, who claimed to be the guardian of 17% of the Peka Glade. Amused by Tammyâ€™s strange poison-ivy picking behavior, the forest spirit decided to follow along on the journey. So, the next time you venture into Peka Glade and see a Popoko covered in poison ivy, donâ€™t be surprised; itâ€™s probably just Tammy, showing off her â€˜special powerâ€™ on the treetops again.
