You are a zergling. You have spent the entirety of your short lifespan serving the overmind as the foot soldier of the swarm. Your meager existence has made you a sacrifice. You are the opening play and the last second savior. Although you may be small and cheap, many a battle would have been lost and many a win unawarded without your immense sacrificial masses. Your life is disposable to begin with, often short and very eventful. To the lucky zergling there is an award which can be considered a great honor. You have been chosen for this by the overmind, to mutate into a ball of toxic and corrosive fluid, able to take out buildings and entire armies in one explosion. Today, your kamikaze lifestyle jumps to the extreme. Today you become, a Baneling.
When a Baneling gets close enough to an enemy, it triggers a reaction within its volatile chemical payload, causing the creature to explode with a shower of searing acid. The explosion destroys the Baneling but also inflicts terrible damage to its enemies.
The Baneling’s lethality is enhanced by the Zerg predilection for burrowing. An apparently safe area can turn into a death trap as these monstrosities emerge and charge into the midst of their foes, giving little time to react.
