As the lights turned off and the factory shut down for the night, all that could be heard was the steady hum of the machines as they waited on standby for the next day's use. Georgina now crept silently out of her hiding place and into the moonlit aisle, scanning the area for any loose thread or spare button. The humans didn't know that she lived there and despite sometimes pondering why their tools were not always where they had left them, they probably never would.

Just ahead of her she spied a spool of turquoise thread carelessly abandoned on the floor. She hurried over and placed it in her basket, by the end of the night it would be full to bursting. This eager search for material was how her nights always began. Upon hearing her stir, Alan, the manager's pet rabbit, deftly hopped out of his pen in the office to find her. The two were close friends and frequently went on adventures together in the dead of the night.

The factory produced cuddly toys for children of all ages, ranging from bright red dinosaurs with sharp teeth to delicate, fluffy mice in dainty ballet shoes. Every once in a while though, there would be a toy which didn't make the cut; either missing an eye, had a wonkily stitched smile, was made with mismatched fabrics or some other fault which meant that it would not be fit for sale. These toys were destined to be thrown away and unfortunately for Georgina, she had been one of these rejects.

As they were loading the bin with unwanted toys, it just so happened that a fire alarm sounded, causing all of the employees to stop what they were doing and evacuate the premises. Seizing her opportunity, Georgina hauled herself up the steep sides of the bin and fell down to the factory floor where she promptly hid herself beneath the nearest work bench. When it was time for the workers to come back indoors, no one noticed that she had gone.

Georgina used to be enchanted with the idea of being a real toy, one which was loved and played with by a child. So in love was she with the idea, that in the early days after her escape she would busy herself with finding and collecting materials which she would then use in an attempt to correct the mistakes. As time passed though, her feelings began to change. Sewing one's own arm or leg proved to be harder than imagined, progress was slow and once she'd made friends with Alan, she no longer craved a different life.

The machines and their human operators still make their mistakes but now there is someone who can fix them and that is why Georgina and Alan spend each night on this peculiar scavenger hunt. Whenever a toy isn't quite up to par and gets thrown into the bin, Georgina eagerly looks forward to her next project for she knows that she can help save them from the tip. Over the years she has become very gifted and with a needle and thread she can remedy almost any mistake within the night, before anyone has a chance to notice.

With each toy that she modifies, she feels a great sense of accomplishment. What once started out as a miserable life has become one filled with adventure and creativity - Georgina wouldn't change it for the world!
