He had always been curious about what waited on the other side. Heaven? Hell? Surely whatever it was, it had to be better than the life he was living now. He had always been such a curious child. Curious and a little sad. It had only taken exactly him one quick step off the edge of a cliff and then he was free. “Ferrin, right?” he heard his name and opened his eyes. Around him was nothing but a bright light. Once his eyes had adjusted he noticed the unusual and new tentacles that had replaced his legs. “Death by drowning, age seventeen. Awfully young, eh kid? Musta been a suicide or else ya wouldn't have ended up here. Name's Tristan.”“Where...where am I? Why do I..look like this?” he managed to croak out in an unsteady tone. Tristan patted him on the back. “The afterlife. As the newest suicide, it'll be your job to guide the souls of those who died at sea,” he laughed, “The new look is just to help ya out, but dontcha worry. After a thousand or so years, you'll get used to it.”“A thousand...?”“The price for suicide, kid. But dontcha worry. People are dying all the time, so you'll have plenty of work to keep ya busy.” Tristan ruffled his hair and slowly faded away, leaving Ferrin behind to deal wit the lost souls. Ferrin never really got used to the new body, though he liked the work and was good at it. Maybe killing himself had really been the best choice of his life.
