Jack Harris was one of few men I had done business with that I felt I could trust, and possibly the smartest man I’ve ever known. He was probably the only business-associate of mine that hadn’t done time. The government couldn’t seem to get anything to stick on this guy and believe me, they had tried, but he didn’t give them many chances. He was good at what he did. That’s why the mafia kept using his services. Jack was “The Doctor”. Everything was off record and in the dark. Just like him.
Jack was a lean guy, doing pretty much as he pleased. Not a made man, not a wise guy, just a connected guy, which meant he could make mistakes without actually risking his behind… and he could wear the moustache he loved more than life itself.
Never had I seen him in jeans or t-shirts, only suits and shirts with fitting ties. It went well with his style. The slick hair, the well tended moustache and the glasses he only took off for two occasions; if he was gonna fight, or if he was gonna have sex. He almost looked like a collage professor of some sort, if it weren’t for the street-smart glint in his eyes.

This was Jack.

Jacks apartment was practical and lied as central as attainable, in the heart of town. You had access to the metro station and most likely all the busses driving in the city. He had the dark allies, the iron fences surrounding the building and the whole shebang. It was an old block and from the outside it could almost seem like something that belonged in an old New York movie from the 50s. The looks of the building fooled you though. The apartments were very nicely decorated with a modern look. Very nice for the people who like it… and can afford it. Money wasn’t Jacks biggest concern in life. He was in his late 30s and had worked with the mob his whole professional life. That’ll give you a nice personal credit. I looked down at my shoes before again taking in the view of the old building. I took a deep breath before I entered the apartment building. Jack had told me to feel as home, and I was definitely planning on doing that tonight.
The morning birds had most likely started to sing by now, so I moved silently up the stairs to the second floor. Harris wasn’t supposed to come home from France until tomorrow night, so knocking would have no effect. I looked around carefully before feeling around in the lampshade beside Jacks door. I pulled my hand out when I found his spare key and burned my fingertips on the light bulb which made me drop it. Stupid Roja, I thought and picked up the key from the ground and stuck it into the lock. I opened the door carefully and peeked inside. It was pretty dark, darker than outside in fact. I closed the door and flicked the light switch on, it brightened up the whole apartment and that’s when I saw the two bodies on the couch. Jack had come home early, obviously. He was on his back on the couch only wearing a pair of pants and covered by an underdressed female. Jack, who was now awake, looked at me with surprised and narrowed eyes. The woman had been asleep on his chest, but the light had woken her as well. She looked at me and then Jack. I hurled around, facing the door. Not wanting her to feel stared at.
“I’m so sorry; I thought no one was home”, I started. “I’m really sorry”. The girl took it all with ease. She sat up and took a blanket that was lying over the back of the couch to cover her. “It’s okay, honey. No need to hide”. I turned back around and gave her an apologetic look. She kissed Jack, who just smiled. “I’ll take the bathroom first if you don’t mind”. Without waiting for an answer she stood up and grabbed her clothes that were all scattered around the living room and then walked to the bathroom. I could hear the door lock. Jack looked up at me and grinned.
“Do you take everything you hear as literally as what I told you last week”? He stood up and closed his belt. I smiled carefully as a silent response. “So, what happen to your face”? He asked me while walking to the kitchen, finding a couple of beers. I sat down in one of the chairs. My head was pounding like the worlds worst hangover and my nerves were still playing with me. They didn’t get any better by this… sitting here with him. He probably knew. Knew that I wanted him. I peeked up and looked after him thought my eye lashes. It was never a good time to tell him. I didn’t even know how. What I wanted to do was to marsh into the bathroom, throw his date out the window and throw myself at him, bruises and all. That might perhaps have been somewhat of an overkill. He was like a drug of some sort. His energy and presence lured you closer and teased with a happy ending. He was like the thick E string on a guitar when you first learn to play. You’re never supposed to use it, but you keep hitting it anyways. He would have loved that metaphore.

I smiled and looked down at my shoes. I kept coming back here as I had a tendency to get in trouble. The fact that he was a doctor was just a bonus. He was 15 years older than me (give and take a few. I didn’t trust him on that), and here I sat, shivering, aching and longing for the most alluring scum of the earth. The handsome, sophisticated, lying, seductive, arrogant jerk. The tempting drug and sneaky E string that popped up out of nowhere.

That was Jack.
