Hariette grew up in a wealthy family. She was raised to be able to have almost anything she wanted. If she wanted a new toy she got it, if she wanted a new minion, she got it, if she wanted to redo her room with new paint and furniture - she got it. But there was one thing Hariette wanted that her family never granted her - freedom.

Hariette dreamed of been a pilot. Time and time again she begged her family for flying lessons, time and time again they refused. Her family was old fashioned. They believed the female's place was in the home. Hariette was able to be well educated, but she wasn't to get a job. She was trained that her job would be to look after the children and husband - cook for them, make sure they had everything they needed and to keep the house spotless.

This is the way it was when she was growing up, her mother would stay at home, cleaning, cooking, then cleaning some more. Her father would go to work and as soon as he got home her mother would tend to his every need.

Although Hariette knew she was lucky to get so much, she wasn't happy. She didn't want to grow up as a housewife. She didn't even want to marry or have kids. She didn't worry if she didn't have a big house with fancy furniture, she just wanted to be able to follow her dream.

Hariette tried at first to talk to her family about how she felt, but she was always turned away. Eventually she knew she had to make a decision - was she going to live the life her parents wanted for her - surrounded by luxury but not doing anything to achieve her goals, or was she going to let her family down and leave to follow her dream?

It didn't take Hariette long to make her decision. Quietly she packed a bag - just a few clothes, some food and some money, and scribbled out a note explaining where she was going and why, then she quietly slipped out the door and into the night.

Hariette spent her first few nights in a cheap hotel until she found an affordable rental home. It was tiny compared to what she was used to, with just one bedroom, a bathroom and a kitchen. But as she spent her first night in that house, she felt like she was home.

The very next day Hariette got up early and started job hunting. She didn't care what type of job she got, just something to help her get by. It took her a week but she found a job at the food shop, helping them cook up burgers and wraps to sell to the hungry population. Every week Hariette paid the rent, bought food and put some money away. Eventually she had enough to get her dream started.

Hariette went to the nearest flying school and enrolled. Her first time in a plane enthralled her. She learned the controls very quickly, the instructor felt she was a natural. It didn't take her long to pass her lessons. She then asked about hiring a plane so she could give short flights to others for payment, her request was accepted and it wasn't long before the requests for flights stretched for miles. Soon Hariette had enough money to achieve the next part of her dream.

Hariette bought her own plane, and a block of land. She built a garage to keep her plane in and a house to live in. There was only one part of her dream left.

Hariette enrolled in a new type of school - she learned to build her own planes and make repairs. Now Hariette feels like she has achieved her dream. She lives on her own, has her own garage, flies others around and in her spare time she builds planes to sell and buys old ones to fix up and sell.

Her family were at first devastated to find her note, they tried to make her come home and thought she had gone silly. After much arguing they let her be, and have since accepted her decision, even kind of supporting her - her mother even agreed to look around her workshop - though she complained about the grease and the tools lying around constantly.

Hariette now works hard for the little she has, she doesn't ask for a lot in return for her joy-flights, she just asks for enough to get by. She lives in a small house with the basics. Many can't believe that she gave up all the luxury she had to work in a dirty garage fixing planes and taking people for cheap flights - but that's what she loves doing and she couldn't be happier.
