A cornflower is a small blue, or sometimes purple, flower, very common in Europe. In England it was treated as a weed in crop fields, but is now endangered due to overuse of herbicides destroying the soil it used to flourish in.

Grade school. A time where everything seemed enchanted and fanciful, when pixies still danced through the air and genies still granted wishes. The boy behind me pulled my braids and shove a piece of paper into my hands, blushing furiously, then turned away. I waited until after the bell dismissed us, then I glanced at the note I had just received. It contained a doodle of a flower, and the words "Will it fade?". In folklore, young men in love would wear a cornflower upon their bosom, and if it faded too fast it meant that their love was not returned. I contemplated this idea, turned it over in my head. I scribbled down my answer. I would not return that note for several years, where it was found in the back of a gardening drawer yellowed with age. The pencil scratches had not faded.
