"don't you ever," the child asked, "get tired of guarding everyone else's dreams?"
"very rarely," eisita smiled wryly. "but i make time for my own too." the two of them sat on poofy clouds, as the air around them fizzled between twilight sun particles and a vague colorless shimmer. an endless array of iridescent bubbles floated around them, delicate but indestructible.
"you know, part of the fun of bubbles is getting to pop them," the child said, trying to boop one with their nose. the bubble simply bounced away. "or maybe not really being able to touch them. they're these little universes that exist for only a moment before they burst."
"oh, these bubbles will pop too," eisita replied steadily. "everything has its end; time is just stretched out here. stretched enough where things can be manipulated, remembered, forgotten... created."
"forgotten?" the child said, their voice suddenly sounding like a ghost's, like an echo. "did i...am i...forgetting something?"
eisita cursed in their head. of all the things the child latched on to, it had to be that word.
"everyone forgets," eisita said, making sure to keep their voice even. "you can remember later. you have time." eisita pulled two bubbles out of the air, palming one in each hand. "want to see what it feels like to merge universes?"
the child's face was so open with wonder, bright eyes, a delighted smile; and then the child began visibly vibrating with excitement. they moved towards eisita and cautiously, because that is the human instinct with bubbles, pushed the two bubbles together so that, with a nearly inaudible "shloop" sound, they merged into one luminous sphere.
◯
the two sat there, watching it float lazily, until the child said
"it felt like he was birthing new universes with every exhale."
"what?" eisita asked.
"what?" the child returned, eyes vacant, like they hadn't heard themselves, like they were in a completely different conversation altogether.
◌
the bubble popped.
"It's degenerative," she said. "But they're not afraid. Lost, yes, but it's not conclusive if fear is something they still have a hold on."
The orderly nodded as he jotted notes on his clipboard.
"Has anyone come to see them recently?"
why are you...how did you get here? it's not your time yet. it's not--ARE YOU LISTENING?! are you lis--can you hear me?...can you see me?...are you okay? are you okaywhose idea was this? take some responsibility. where are you? where
go home. don't ever show your face here again.
