It was a cool autumn morning in the bay near Delphi Beach where the medical ship 'The Krakatoa' was anchored and I was on board doing my first morning rounds visiting my patients when I got a call from the Constable of Port Plunder on Omen Island. I live on Omen Island with my life mate Lieutenant Colonel Weldon George, recently retired from the Subetan Air Command and we both are good friends with the Constable, so it was not unusual to receive a comm-link from him, except this time he sounded troubled. At first I feared the worse, that some rogue pirates, or more likely, the indigenous tribesmen of the islands had somehow harmed my family. But he reassured me and told me that he had found a very sick animal and that it didn't look good and could I come and have a look. He also told me that his Sheriff was ramming ball and powder into a brace of pistols and was going to put the poor beast out of it's misery if I wasn't there by noon. He rationalized his Sheriff's reasoning by offering up the lame platitude that no animal should suffer as much as this beast appeared to be suffering.

I wasn't about to tell him how insensitive his remark was over the comm-link. Doing so would possibly anger him and I would end up losing a potential patient. Still, my sassy little brain wanted to tell him that even though no human should have to suffer the agony of such stupidity, those of us of the fur persuasion do not go around putting bullets into the heads of idiots or sick humans, we try to heal them. Instead, I thanked him, said I would fly over as soon as possible to see the patient, and to have hope. I excused myself from my staff, donned a flight suit, climbed into Passion Flower, shot off the flight deck of the Krakatoa and headed for home. Passion Flower can go supersonic and within minutes I stepped onto the makeshift tarmac runway of my compound at home and was greeted by the Constable who looked at his pocket watch, "Damn, Freddie! Delphi to Omen in fourteen minutes and fourty-six? Little One, where did you learn to fly like that? When a life is at stake, I will fly through walls to try to save it, I don't give a damn about impressing people. I grunted at the Constable and he led me toward his land vehicle.

He had the patient on a dirty blanket in the back of his rover and he was right, she didn't look good at all, emaciated, parasite-ridden, with maggots in her caked nostrils, eyes and innumerable open wounds. She was burning up with fever and she was panting rapidly, he tongue swollen with thirst. I put my paw on her head and she made a feeble attempt at thumping her tail, here was a beast with an indomitable spirit, who was still with us. "Constable, where did she come from? What's her name?" I asked.

"You are not going to believe this, but she was found in an abandoned shack that was once owned by one of the local pirates who was arrested about a month ago by the central government. The kumos was tied up inside the shack and has been without food for who knows how long. Nobody knows her name." He removed his hat and scratched his head, "Mrs. Freddie, Ma'am, shall I take her back and put her.."

My eyes burned red with anger and I barked, "Shut up! Enough of that talk! You will not harm this creature." I stroked the kumos' head again, "Humans have done enough harm as it is. Bring her inside, then go away and let me..." I realized that I was crying and that I had let my temper get the best of me and I turned to the poor stupid man and apologized, "I'm sorry for yelling, thank you for trying to help, please just help me carry her into the building." Once inside, the Constable carefully lay the kumos on an examination table I had for just such emergencies, swept off his hat, bowed low and took his leave of me, "Freddie, Ma'am, no worries, we wouldn't have called you if we thought you couldn't do something. I guess we just don't know really how to say things the right way." As he turned to leave, I could see the man take out a handkerchief and wipe his eyes. Maybe I misjudged him, maybe he wasn't the insensitive jerk I thought he had been.

That was a month ago and the change has been remarkable. A Kumos has remarkable self-healing powers, but a Spectrum Kumos even more so. She had to be quarantined to prevent the others from becoming infected with parasites and so she was depressed at first, which didn't aid her healing at first. But with the aid of some strong herbal teas, poultices and syringes, we got rid of all the parasites. And she got to meet the others in my family, including Niles, my Blacklight Kumos and personal bodyguard.

Salves, scrubbings, ointments and cleansers returned her skin and fur to it's pristine beauty. A diet of table scraps and good clean water put meat back on her bones, the fresh air and sunshine restored her playfulness. I know that some of the treatment was quite painful, especially scrubbing the filth out of open wounds, but she has a remarkably solid attitude. She knows what has been needed for her healing and she has stood firm through her rocky course. She also had a lot of companionship during her treatment, Niles really came out of his shell and was very attentive to her, staying with her through all her treatments. When she was well enough to leave the house and venture outside, he showed her all his favorite haunts and they could be seen all over Omen Island cavorting, strolling along the beaches, visiting all the shopkeepers and vendors in Port Plunder and endearing themselves to the community. Niles may have given Rocky something to live for too..., and he has given her something to live for...because Roxanne and Niles are expecting their first litter in a few months.
