Caelin slipped silently through the shadows, pipe clutched tightly in his right hand as he strolled down the sidewalk. His nerves were frazzled that night, so without realizing it, he stepped directly into a shaft of moonlight peeking through the trees. Recognizing his mistake, Caelin scrambled back into the shadows — but not quickly enough, for any onlooking spectator would have been able to observe something quite peculiar about him.

He cast no shadow.

Caelin silently cursed at himself as he scanned the length of the street, looking for signs of movement. Finally satisfied that he hadn't been seen, he began moving again, walking among the darkest crevices lining the street.
