York Benjamin has a name that sounds like it had been flipped around. An innocent, kind-hearted 9 year-old boy who lives in a small cottage in the woods with his family. Has an older brother who went away for school who he idolizes. He wears a newsboy's cap (he aspires to hand out the newspapers in the adjacent town when he gets older) and the red scarf given to him when his brother left. He enjoys exploding the forest around him: jumping over logs, picking pears, watching lines of ants (and secretly feeding them), visiting the baby mice that life in the old tree stump, and catching butterflies. One strange day, he finds a perfect statue of a bird that leads to an extraordinary adventure.
