Fan-Tee-On
Phanteon walked down the street turning her face up towards the warm sunshine. It was a beautiful day, birds were singing, the smell of fresh cut grass was a reminder that the weather was finally switching from spring to summer. It had been a long winter and mother nature didn't hold back.Phanteon had missed being able to walk from home to her bakery. Her bakery. It had been a year now and she still couldn't get use to the fact that she had her very own bakery! She had come a long way from filling orders from her adopted mothers kitchen. Her bakery kept her plenty busy but she always took the time to enjoy and appreciate the little things life offered. The one thing she hadn't been blessed enough to experience yet was love. Oh sure, she knew love in the way of the love she had for her mother and her siblings and of course her best friend Apol.
As Phanteon kept walking the smile she typically had on her face got bigger. Ah Apol. He had come around when they were both kids. He was only 2 months older but he never let her forget it. Mom said he was a stray that wouldn't stay in the house with them. He was very much a loner except when it came to her. Mom said it was because she had such a kind, compassionate and caring personality that he just couldn't resist. She regularly brought him food from her mom and of course the baked goods she frequently made. At first he was reserved and wouldn't take anything from her but now he visited her bakery daily for his favorite Peanut Butter Swirl Brownies. The thought made her giggle to herself.
"What are you laughing about?"
"Oh!" She looked up into Jakovi's face surprised to see him standing outside of her bakery door.
"Were you daydreaming again?"
"I do not daydream, I just wasn't watching where I was going."
"Suuuure, if you say so." Jakovi cocked his eyebrow at her as he often did.
"You're here early today." She started unlocking the door to the bakery. Why was her her hand shaking slightly? It seemed like any time she saw him her pulse quickened and she got this odd feeling in her stomach as well.
"I needed to see you." He said as they both walked inside.
"Oh? What about?"
"We need to talk but I wanted to do it alone before anyone came in."
Now her heart started pounding fast, drumming in her ears. What was wrong with her? Maybe she was getting sick.
She put her bag down behind the counter in it's usual spot. SpunSugar came walking out to greet her. The kitty lived in the bakery where she felt most comfortable. Phanteon had saved her from the streets as a baby blob kitty that was abandoned. She was the best helper Phanteon could ask for although she frequently got into the frosting.
"Us" Phanteon deliberately kept her back to him, focusing on petting SpunSugar. She suddenly felt light headed and couldn't face him.
"What about us?"
"I have thought long and hard and need to tell you how I really feel about you."
"H..How you really feel?" The best she could do was stammer out the question. What was happening? They were best friends. She knew he cared about her but the way he was talking...
"Yes, damnit Phanteon would you turn around and look at me? This is important."
She swallowed hard and turned to face him. It felt like her whole body was tingling. What was this odd feeling?
"I love you Phanteon. I'm not talking just as friends. I've loved you for a long time and I want to take our friendship to a deeper level. I want YOU." Jakovi put his hands in his pockets. He had never felt this nervous before and it was a strange feeling that he didn't like. Why was she just staring at him like that? Why wasn't she saying anything? Did he make a mistake? Should he have kept it to himself even longer?
"Well?!" He waited for her to answer.
