History:
Meet Ries.
He’s sixteen years old (an Aries-Taurus cusp) and from a little town known as Seattle, Washington.
He was born to two loving parents—Jason and Malinda Henderson—after years of failed pregnancies.
The two had met in college. Malinda was studying to be an art teacher at a public school, and Jason was on his way to being a college professor. As a teenager Malinda had been told she would never be able to bear a child. So, it was understandable that the fear that rested in Malinda’s heart was thick when she was told she was actually pregnant. However, her heart was freed of that stress as soon as she looked at the small pink child she had just brought into the world—healthy and squalling.
His childhood was plagued with misbehavior and polite corrections. He’d never been grounded, as his parents (who were a sort of suburban hippie couple) believed in teaching through example and from experience. Entering middle school, his misbehavior quieted, but it was just the calm before the storm.
The thing that always bothered Ries was that there was no defining moment in his childhood. No stark tragedy that shaped him into the model citizen of Doucheville that he was. He just was, and because of that he decided he wanted to do the teen rebellion thing. Not in so many words, of course, but that was basically it. He wanted to fight The Man, too! So began his epic journey of self discovery and assholery. He tried piercings. He tried smoking. Drinking. Drugs. Sex.
Nothing made them angry. Just concerned and loving. Which he didn’t hate, of course-- but where was the backlash? Where was the fury? The disappointment?
And what about the boys? The boys he kissed in the hallways and behind his house. It’d started out as a way to rebel against a homophobic society (as his parents were both very liberal), but was it really something else? He didn’t know and that scared him. A lot.
Nice to meet you.
Personality:
Out of all of the words out there to describe Ries, you wouldn’t guess that ‘insecure’ would be up there. He was a bundle of attitude and confidence. Of cocky jokes and rolled eyes.
You would never guess his embarrassment at being a virgin, or not fully understanding his sexuality. His nervousness towards those he views as ‘better’ than him.
That’s not to say he’s not confident at the same time, though. Ries thinks he’s above plenty of people. He knows how he feels about things and he figures you should know what he thinks, too.
He’s loud, he’s obnoxious and he’s more than a little bit rude. The mouth on him is unfitting for such a skinny kid—for all of the trouble he gets in for it he oughta be some brawny wrestler type.
But that was just how he was. Long, skinny and cheeky.
Ries was made up of opposites. He was made up of battling forces and teen angst. He was angry and he was content. He was proud and he was ashamed.
All in all, though, he liked himself-- probably a bit more than he should. He figured he was fairly attractive, and he also figured he was fairly funny. But whether people… appreciated him the way they should he wasn’t sure.
