Story & Profile by Rogue
The air was crisp and the night was cool. Faden unfurled his wings slightly as he stood outside of his tent, watching his troops form ranks. He knew their loyalty to him, against any enemy, was greater even than their fear of death. They would follow his every command without question. He had more power, he knew, even than his highness; power which now weighed heavily on his mind.

Earlier that night, Faden was sitting across from a prisoner his scouts had captured. He had never hesitated to slit the throat of a traitor and would easily have done so now if information was less valuable than vengeance. The Nocturne, huddled at the corner of the cage, would tell Faden what he wanted to know, one way or another.

Faden enjoyed torturing the boy with silence. It took longer than slicing flesh or crushing bones, but when his thoughts consumed him and he had imagined the worst, the prisoner would be broken. So Faden waited. And as he waited, he thought.

His troops were preparing for an early morning assault on the enemy encampment. The opposing forces had halted their march at the lower valley on the far side of the red mountain. Scouts had returned with armory reports and captives taken from enemy outposts. The other captives had cried and begged for mercy. They were pathetic and Faden had ordered his troops to rip them apart. As the air soaked up the smells of fear and blood, his troops began to hunger even more for the battle that was forthcoming.

However, the Nocturne had not spoken or cried when he had been dragged into camp with the other captives. His eyes, although sullen, had not been full of panic or rage. It was for these reasons that he was alive. He did not show the same weakness as the others. His heart may hold fear but his resolve masked it well. Faden wanted to know what the young Nocturne resolved to do; or who had inspired such resolve. The power to lead and the power to overcome fear are two things Faden knew could lead a campaign to victory. His entire career was proof of that.

The prisoner stirred and his shackles clanked against each other. Faden returned his focus to the cage in front of him. The silence continued for a few more minutes before the prisoner finally asked “How can you fight for a lord who does not return your love and who will trade your conquered land for gold and other jewels?” His eyes turned to Faden and he continued, “For all of your victories, you have gained nothing.”

“I serve his lordship with the respect his station and deeds command” Faden responded without a hint of emotion. “I do not seek love, nor do I give it.”

“And what will you do when his majesty is through; when the battles are done and you are no longer useful?”

“There will always be more gold for his highness to claim and more weakness for my army to abolish. The line of battles will never run dry; we will always move from land to land, seeking the rush of battle, anticipating the day that the strong will stand victorious.”

“You will bring the world into a dark age with your bloodlust” the prisoner said deeply. “The world you dream of is a solitary place where none can survive.”

“I do not dream of a world. I live in the one I see before me and am sickened by how the weak and powerless have been allowed to survive. They are parasites; and those who feed them engage in an injustice greater than my mercy can bear.”

The Nocturne said nothing for several long minutes. Then, in barely a whisper, he said “One day, the world you wake to will be an image of the nightmare you unleashed on it” and turned to face the corner of his cage.

Several hours later, Faden stood outside his tent watching his troops. He wondered how long it would take for the nightmare to encompass all.
