"Girls who see him kinda follow him back home
Cause he is Eros and he's Apollo"
How far could a God fall?
Erotes had pondered that question that many times, especially during moments such as this, when he was idly tapping his phone. But necessity was a powerful motivator in moments like this. He would prefer his work in days of old though. Such emotions back then were much more filling, and the task genuinely noble and grand. Nowadays, the polar opposite was all he could manage.
Sitting in the bare one-room apartment, the man sighed, leaning back in a worn wooden chair. The simple bed behind him matched the other pieces of faded wood furniture, the only plastic items in the room present by necessity. He hated the stuff, having grown up with stone, wood, and metal furnishings for centuries.
But now it was all artificial, much like the barely noticeable love that drifted through the air.
As the son of Aphrodite, he had once embraced his divine duty with an eager heart. Weaving two lives together and seeing the relationship blossom had been his charge, and he dove in happily. For a time, that had been enough. Couples courted and fell in love, in the manners for each culture of the time.
And yet slowly, it began to wane throughout the lands. Love used to fill the air, the paintings, the sculptures, every stone laid in the street; but now it was so sparse as to be washed away with every rainstorm, sent into the gutters of the sewer system.
When had the decline started? The classical era? The industrial revolution? Erotes couldn’t recall. What he did know, was that the emotion of breaking hearts was at least sufficient to survive on. It was a far cry from playing ‘cupid’, as it was known today, but it was enough.
His blue eyes narrowed, recalling the day he had confronted his mother and the other pantheon beings about his plight. Even though his brothers supported him, Erotes’ concerns were waved aside by the other Gods.
To their credit, he hadn’t expected much else.
He had something that would surprise them however. It had been a simple matter to decide of course. Continue working for nothing, growing weaker on the lack of love in the world, or renounce his wings to walk among mortals for a lesser price.
He had shorn off his wings that very moment, and he had walked out never to return.
And now, here he sat.
It had been fairly simple to learn how to design a method for his survival in the modern age; a dating app on a new model of phone. The devices had spread everywhere, and so it was a perfect carrier. With his mortal needs such as money met, he could focus on keeping his demi-god side satisfied.
He smirked sadly, tapping another few areas of his phone. With the world lacking in love, it was so simple to play into other’s interests.
The emotion when he rejected them was enough for him to survive on. Breaking hearts were sour and barely full; but survive he could.Barely.
The demi-god opened up another application, this one an offshoot of the simple dating app he had created. A small icon flashed softly.
‘Fifty-thousands users downloaded.’
This was a more in-depth option of the app, still not completed. Even so, that many people were interested in it. At least some individuals finding that forging a relationship other than just the point-and-click methods appealing.
Perhaps, in time, he could rekindle his old methods. And even further, perhaps there was still enough love in this world to ignite a fire and have it spread.
