Nolan Harkness
Total bad-ass
Nolan Harkness is an ex-Navy Commodore who is pre-maturely grey and hating it.
After his wife died from breast cancer, he withdrew all his savings and opened up a small, quaint cafe, where he now works with a bunch of teenagers. He's a tired man, spends most of his time talking to the customers or reading the newspaper with a cup of coffee.
Proud, resilient, generous
World-weary, troubled, lonely
Work-in-progress. Looking to commission a layout.

She was beautiful, his wife. He could never understand why she married him. Him, with the gaunt face and sunken eyes, the man with such a gormless expression on his face everytime they met. He was just a seaman then, young and head-strong but too damn quiet and thoughtful for his own good. People liked him, but everyone could see that he was nothing special. Just a stoic young man who got on with things and didn't faff around.
But she saw something in him. She liked him. Hell, she more than liked him. She found something in him that she loved and she brought that to the surface. Made him more charismatic, made him a better man.
He smiled more with her around. He even laughed.
He really loved that woman.
She became pregnant with their first when they were both just 25.
He vowed to work his best to give his son a good life, but he wouldn't quit his career in the Navy. She was more than happy with that, understood his wishes, his love for the sea and the warship he worked on.
Three years later, he's a few ranks higher and his second son is born. He's at sea when it happens, in some disputed territory trying to keep the peace. He cried for a day with joy then got his request for leave in.
Two months after being honoured at a high-class ceremony for obtaining the rank of Commodore, his third son was introduced to the world.

And now, the end is here
And so I face the final curtain
My friend, I'll say it clear
I'll state my case, of which I'm certain
I've lived a life that's full
I travelled each and ev'ry highway
And more, much more than this, I did it my way
Regrets, I've had a few
But then again, too few to mention
I did what I had to do and saw it through without exemption
I planned each charted course, each careful step along the byway
And more, much more than this, I did it my way
Yes, there were times, I'm sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew
But through it all, when there was doubt
I ate it up and spit it out
I faced it all and I stood tall and did it my way
I've loved, I've laughed and cried
I've had my fill, my share of losing
And now, as tears subside, I find it all so amusing
To think I did all that
And may I say, not in a shy way,
"Oh, no, oh, no, not me, I did it my way"
For what is a man, what has he got?
If not himself, then he has naught
To say the things he truly feels and not the words of one who kneels
The record shows I took the blows and did it my way!
If you don't know this song, then shame on you.
Its My Way, sung by the absolutely magnificent Frank Sinatra
