As but a pup, my mother always scolded me. Slow down, sit tight, you’re going nowhere fast. Be still, my child. She had me still and silent, while inside I burned with a passion to move. To prove I exist, to let as many people see and acknowledge my existence as I could. To run by them in a blazing fit of glory suited only to the best.
Faster.
When she passed away I found myself in the most curious position. When I moved, fluid as a cat, as quickly as I pleased, no one scolded me, or told me to be still. No one gave me those long, cold glares of disappointment and deep-set, cold hatred. So I ran.
Faster.
I ran, and I ran. I ran so hard, and so fast, I surely must have run off the end of the earth and straight through the very caverns of the underworld. I made it back to the surface in a blazing glory of speed and ashes, soot falling from my fur and charred ground between my toes.
Faster.
So naturally I took to racing. To be the best. The fastest. The brightest star in the solar system.
I find it much more preferable to burn brightly and burn out than to fizzle and fade.
Faster.
