If you had to build a machine to play a tune, what would you build? A cicada? Well...people can be quite eccentric at times.

A lone mechanical cicada flits through the city, always playing the same song. Steam clouds hang around it like storm clouds, and indeed, it smells of petrichor. No wonder that the song it plays sounds melancholic to some. It sounds like a rainy day, of people walking with umbrellas, of streetlamps shining on windows covered in raindrops. Not an angry song, but almost peaceful.

Some swear the sound comes from the mouth, others claim the noise from the same pipes that spews out dark steam. Perhaps it plays the song differently each time, but surely that can't be. Surely it's just playing a recording; not even the smallest upright piano can fit into the mechanical cicada. Just a glorified phonograph, right?

Each day, it grows ever more encumbered by rust, its song growing weaker and weaker. But some helpful mechanic always repairs it and restores it to gleaming new. Perhaps it's the pretty jeweled bee sometimes seen flitting around the cicada.

An oddity, nothing more. Some would call it an elaborate toy. Some would say sentient musician. But so pretty is the song it plays that it buzzes through the streets unperturbed.
