To protect their young from treasure-hunters, robbers, poachers and the like Griffins have, over time, developed a society wherein the entire group works to protect the communal eyrie and maim or kill any who dare trespass too close.

Gimbal did protect and defend the portion of territory-border he had been charged with--the would-be-thieves didn't leave with any of the gold and treasures they'd come seeking--but he had done so by tricking them into digging for that treasure in so many locations that when they did finally locate some of the buried gold which Griffin lands are said to practically overflow with...they'd been too exhausted to carry the loot away.
