It was a lovely spring afternoon.
My apprentice and I had just come back
from a lovely lunch, not knowing that
an adventure was in store. I was expecting
some friends to come by, but what I was not
expecting was what this day would hold.
I observed two young men sitting on the
park bench outside my store, but it was nothing
out of the ordinary, and yet for some reason
I couldn't put my finger on, they didn't seem
to belong there. Then, suddenly, they ran
into my hat shop as if they were hiding
from the cops. Of course, I love adventure,
and had just been complaining to Minnie
about how I had no adventure in my life,
but I wasn't sure this was the kind of
adventure I wanted to take on.
Still, an adventure is an adventure,
and seeing as they had no weaponry,
and were acting quite cordial,
I decided to have a little fun and flirt a little.
I learned their names
were Cornelius & Barnaby.
I flirted a little with Cornelius, he flirted back,
and before we knew it, the afternoon was over,
and we were heading out to dinner together...
We went to the fanciest restaurant
that we could find.
I knew he couldn't afford it,
but he wouldn't admit it.
I had brought my own money
but let him have his pride by letting him pretend he could afford it
while I ordered a quite nice
(and quite expensive) meal:
green salad, pheasant,
mashed chestnuts, and a nice white wine.
He ordered champagne!
(For a man with little income,
he sure knew how to make a girl swoon.)
The boys were both charming,
but I had my eye on only one.
Since he was flirty, but seemed reluctant to
make any overtures towards a relationship,
I figured I'd have a little more fun
and make him jealous so that
he would be forced to make a move.
I danced with my apprentice
as the boys stared at us,
then after a quite eloquent toast
made by Barnaby,
I gave Barnaby a nice big kiss on the cheek.
At this point, I knew that Cornelius
could hold himself apart from me no longer.
After only a glass of wine
and one of champagne,
it finally happened....
Cornelius asked to put his arm around me,
and told me that he thought I was
the most wonderful woman in the world.
Just looking into his eyes, I was in love.
But a girl just can't say that,
not when she wants to
keep the guy chasing her.
So instead, I asked him to dance.
He said he didn't dance,
and some junk about being Presbyterian.
I knew it was just a line, and the truth was,
he didn't know how to dance.
But there's no better way
to a guy's heart than to dance,
so I promised to teach him.
By this time, I had him so completely
wrapped around my finger,
that he was willing to try,
even if it meant making a fool of himself.
So, I taught him to dance,
and we danced for what could
have been mere seconds or hours,
and I'd have never known the difference,
but when we were truly
in the throes of enjoyment,
I found out why they had run
into my shop in the first place.
They had skipped out of work for the day
to come to New York for an adventure,
and had nearly been caught
by their employer.
But it seems this time
they really were caught,
so I paid the restaurant bills
before he could even think of it,
and we ran out onto our next adventure...
Some mix-ups happened then
that I still can't put together,
and we wound up separated
in different cabs.
And his cab seemed almost
like he was in charge
instead of the one following orders.
I really should have warned him
about being careful in the big city,
but once I realized
they were from out of town,
things just happened
way too fast to let him know.
So I told my cabdriver to follow that cab,
and to make sure not to lose him.
I figured if I was wrong,
we'd wind up at the train station,
and if I was right,
who knew where we'd end up.
Adventure!
Somehow we wound up at a kind,
but slightly crazy old lady's house
who seemed to think she needed to host us
even though she didn't know us,
and we had no clue where we were.
As it turned out, it was a friend of his boss,
and his boss was on the way there,
right behind us.
We knew we were trapped,
but having found love,
nothing else was important.
His boss came in
and fired him and his friend,
which was sad, but somehow
that didn't dampen our moods.
Later, while having coffee there,
and trying to figure out
what he would do now,
he told me that no matter what else,
he wanted me by his side forever,
and asked if I'd be his wife.
I had no answer but yes...
Somehow, after his boss calmed down
(and wound up engaged himself!),
my Cornelius had his job back,
and in fact was promoted to partner!
We were married a month later
(though I kept my name for the sake
of my own business,
which I grew to love
despite hating it at the beginning).
Cornelius opened a new store here in New York City,
expanding the business he was newly made partner of.
Occasionally, I have to fight off the girls
who keep falling for him,
but he is undoubtedly mine forever.
I can see that every time he looks at me.
Oh, and don't tell Cornelius yet,
but it seems we have a little one on the way...
