On an average day I'd be found lazing on my ship, The Arachanus, while my loyal crew puttered around on deck. Occasionally we might raid a coastline, or perhaps a merchant ship, but we never took anything from anyone that didn't deserve having something taken. The nobles that took advantage of their positions were our main targets, and everything was going great. We never dreamed that it would end, or even that one day we'd have to retire. We figured that heroes never really die, and even "pirates" can be heroes.
That all changed the day we decided to raid the port of Alexandria. Lord Bralfez was a tyrant, and people ran in fear just at the mention of anything to do with him, sometimes even at the thought that someone might think of him. So we took it upon ourselves to raid his little "inlet," make off with as much loot as possible, and perhaps take him out in the process. But Lord Bralfez was there waiting for us and seized the ship before it even made harbor. Those in the crew that weren't killed were taken prisoner, but as captain, Bralfez made especially sure that I was taken into his "hospitality."
"Ah, Captain Rift, how nice of you to join me. Do sit down and help yourself to some brandy," Bralfez said invitingly, "All that pillaging must build quite a thirst I should think." "I would, Milord," I said, "but it's kind of hard to enjoy a nice drink in pleasant company when one's arms are strapped behind one's back." He gestured to the guards to untie me and handed me a rather large glass of what looked like watermelon brandy. He motioned for me to sit and took an ornate chair of some unclassifiable, possibly extinct wood, for his own. "I like you," he said as I sniffed my drink, "Most people think it extremely dangerous to even think of defying me, let alone actually do it. I like a man that likes to take risks." I took a cautious sip of the brew, found it to be good, and my sip turned into a gulp. "Unfortunately it means I cannot trust you, so therefore you must be dealt with," Bralfez sneered as the concoction took effect. "I hope you liked my little brew, Wavestalker, for I fear it will be your last. It is a very potent poison, harvested from the bellies of Nightmares." I gasped as lights flared and I felt like my insides were fighting my outsides for dominance. My head felt as though it had split open and darkness threatened to take me deep into its grasp and smother me in its icy embrace. I pulled the knife from my boot and slashed wildly at Bralfez as he leaned back and chuckled. "It's no use Captain, Nightmares travel between dimensions. Their stomach acids have developed over the centuries to withstand almost anything. It makes a very slow, yet extremely effective poison." Bralfez laughed as his guards took me down to the dungeons to face my fate alone. It was all I could do to remain conscious, but I was already beginning to feel myself fade.
As the guards threw me into the dirty, rat infested cell, I lost consciousness with a mind-wrenching crunch. One thing Bralfez forgot to mention, or more likely didn't know, was that Nightmares' stomach acids can retain the ability to dimension hop. I flashed in and out of consciousness a dozen times in more than a few different worlds. When I reached this one, the pain stopped, and the darkness took me once again.
When I finally came to, a tall girl with red, curly hair was standing over me, wearing the evilest grin I'd ever seen, apart from Bralfez's. She grabbed me and practically drug me along with her, beginning to spout nonsense about all the fun we were going to have together. I tried struggling, but I was still weak from the poison, so I resigned myself to let her take me "home." When we reached our destination she immediately took me into her room and dressed me in what I could guess were some of her old clothes. As she turned me to face the mirror, what I saw was so terrifying, I lost what little grip I had left. Darkness took me once again as I realized not only that I was stranded on some foreign planet's soil, but I was now a deer that looked as though I'd missed out when they were handing out brains.
For a while I lost hope. The maniac imprisoning me kept too close an eye out for me to escape, even though I didn't know what I'd do even if I could. I delved into a self-destructive state of depression and told myself all was lost. It wasn't until the girl decided I needed company that things turned around. She took me to the pound to pick out a new "friend" and it was there that I spotted her, Ori, my First Mate. Bralfez must've given the whole crew his noxious brew. She was a stupid deer as well, but I would know her icy stare anywhere. My keeper drug me right past her, going towards the pens with the more ghoulish looking "pets." ...But seeing Ori had given me hope: something Bralfez could never extinguish.
My name is Rift Wavestalker, and I will find my crew.
