Matteas stared in the window at the woman he was protecting. She didn't know it. She told him to stay away but there was no way, in his mind, that he could. She was his friend, his love, his soul mate. There was no leaving Deerie alone. Her father was a killer; responsible for the deaths of hundreds. The only chance at a better life for the kingdom hinged on Deerie's survival.
His life hinged on it. Matteas knew that, without her, there would be nothing left for him to live for.
Matteas' hand felt his pocket where her last letter was. He had left his position within the king's court to come find her. He was now seen as a traitor to the crown, but he couldn't care less. He knew that soon enough he would be able to tell her that he was there. Until then, he would sit outside the house that she was living at and hold back his emotions as he watched her in her library, sometimes reading, sometime writing, but often crying. It broke his heart.
He could not wait until, with her, his heart was whole again.
