I came to watch the fall of men. In the churning caves, full of heat and stone, I toiled away my days in ennui. From the rocky sky fell their things into the pools where they burned. We would all watch them, counting the memories, pattering our nervous feet, waiting for what the smoke would say. A frozen gem, shaped like a tear melted to water and steam and inside revealed the wishes of someone in a hungry and icy country. A vial of sand crackles and coils as from the insides exploded the memory of a dry mouth, of parched land. Swollen with thought and hungry for release, these things fell and fell from the world above into our pools. Mostly they were hurt and bitterness. I loved the sadness the most because it felt like cold chains on my heart.
