The wintry wind bit at Icicle's nose and mouth as she wandered through the Ice Fields of Arctic Frost. She watched her breath in front of her create tendrils of warmth and moisture that faded into the falling snow within paw's reach of her face.
She pulled her shawl tighter around her and trudged forward, determined. It was impossible to change her mind once it was set on something, and it was definitely set on this.
"Wintersong?" Icicle called, glancing behind to her to make sure her beloved Snowflear was keeping up with her quick pace.
"I still think think you're insane for doing this," Wintersong mumbled from a few yards away, scurrying to catch up to his companion.
Icicle ignored Wintersong's comment. "She can't be far!" Joy filled the young Chai's voice at the prospect.
Their footsteps were erased as they moved forward through the snow, thoroughly lost even though Icicle wouldn't ever admit to it. Wintersong wasn't sure how exactly they were going to make their way back to the very appealing warmth of their cabin in Alpendale.
"Listen!" Icicle's voice was barely above a whisper, her ears perked at attention. She suddenly stopped, Wintersong crashing into her from behind with a "hmph."
Ice crushed distinctly below feet that were not their own, around 30 yards away.
Icicle's eyes strained to see the source of the footfalls through the snow. Was it another Snowbunny? She threw caution to the wind and ran forward toward the sound, full force. Wintersong strayed behind, apprehensive.
Icicle spotted what she so desperately sought -- the orphaned Chai found who she was thoroughly convinced was her biological mother. "MAMA!"
Her excited squeal traveled to the ears of Mama Mush, who bared her teeth at the ecstatic Chai and unleashed a frightening roar.
Wintersong pulled the shocked Icicle by her shawl until she started moving backward, disappointment already apparent in her sigh. It was far from the reunion she had anticipated. The pair ran in unison as quickly as their paws would carry them away from the enraged Mama Mush.
"Obviously your 'mother' was not as excited to see you as you had hoped!" Wintersong yelled -- cold, frightened and thoroughly annoyed at the climax of their long trek.
