The Farmer

The chickens clucked and warbled in the way chickens do as Noreen tossed handfuls of corn and peaked lettuce amongst the floor of the coop. Kneeling down, she reached a hand towards her friendliest hen, Ginger. “How are you today darling?” Noreen asked in a gentle and cooing voice. Ginger pressed her feathered head against the outstretched knuckles of Noreen’s hand, then scurried to join the others in eating. While the clutch was occupied, Noreen gathered the eggs from their nests in a small basket and then told the chickens goodbye. Upon Noreen’s farm, there were many things to do, and only two hands to accomplish them.

It was late summer, and the busiest time of year for Noreen. Her pear tree was dropping more pears than the ground could catch, her tomato plants were at their peak of production, and, in hind-sight, she would not have planted so many green beans. But this was the season of great bounties - if Noreen worked hard enough (which, by nature, she did). Today was Friday and her work was just beginning. Saturday morning, the farmer’s market would be flooded with the townspeople, and many of them would be gazing over all of the great yield of her garden. By evening, she had collected all which her farm had given her in preparation.

The morning had dressed itself well for the market; the sun was shining warmly and a cool breeze from the Cascades gently tousled Noreen’s auburn locks. Noreen packed up her goods in several baskets, placed what would fit in the passenger seat of her truck, placing the rest in the bed, and then headed to the square. Her truck was made in the same year in which she was born, but it was still very reliable. She drove for many miles before she reached town and yet she was one of the first to be setting up her booth at the market. Soon the market was buzzing though, and much of her stock was gone within the first hour.

All kinds of acquaintances had stopped to talk to Noreen. One farmer had a horse with a sore ankle which he asked for Noreen to look at later and she agreed that she would. Another female friend shared a recipe that she said Noreen’s zucchini would be lovely in. Noreen was always grateful for the warm welcoming, but by noon, she was exhausted. By the time the market closed, Noreen was left with only a few fruits and vegetables, and only one skein of handmade yarn. Satisfied, she collected her empty baskets, began eating her remaining pear, and hopped into her truck to return to her small yellow farmhouse away from the busy town.
