She watched her father climb down the ladder leading up to the attic, carefully placing each foot one below the other. It scared her to imagine tackling the feat herself.
"Are you hungry, Josie? Do you want a grilled cheese sandwich?"
The little girl nodded, "Mhm."
After her father disappeared from her line of sight beneath the upstairs bannister, she returned her gaze up towards the attic. Grammy had just passed on a few weeks ago, and Josephine's dad was finally ready to sort through her belongings. It upset Josephine to see Grammy's bedroom dismantled, but her dad reassured her that they will be keeping most of her stuff - up in the attic.She put one foot on the bottom rung of the ladder. This wasn't scary - yet. She put her other foot on the second rung, followed by the first foot on the third rung. She paused and gripped the ladder firmly in both hands, tightly curling her lips inward with concentration. She then lifted her right foot, then her left foot - right, left, right, left - and she was in!
