The Nexus was an extra-dimensional realm in which reality was carved by one's own thoughts and desires. Inside the Nexus, time and space had no meaning, allowing someone to exist in any time or place that they wished. The doorway to the Nexus was a destructive temporal energy ribbon which existed randomly throughout the galaxy.

Doctor Tolian Soran was an El-Aurian scientist who, in the 24th century, attempted to destroy two stars to create another entrance back to the Nexus. Soran had previously become trapped in a random distortion and experienced brief moments inside the Nexus, in a reality where his family had not been killed by the Borg. He became obsessed with living the fantasy life with his family, and spent the rest of his life trying to return to the Nexus.

Another El-Aurian on board the Starship Enterprise, Guinan, had also experienced being inside the Nexus and described it to Captain Picard as "like being inside of joy. As if joy were something tangible and you could wrap yourself up in it like a blanket."

The Nexus was originally accidentally created from a solar flare by a young Q while bored during a moment in his childhood. During Soran's attempt to re-enter the Nexus, he fought with Captain James T Kirk and ultimately killed him - although Kirk's efforts to stop Soran allowed Captain Picard time to disable the launcher that Soran planned to use to destroy the stars and create an entrance to the Nexus.

After killing Kirk, Soran tried to launch the probe but discovered that Picard had engaged the locking clamps, which destroyed the launcher and killed Soran in a massive explosion.
