Pierce stood in the doorway of the new shop that had just opened on Mayview Avenue. For a new shop, it had a dingy exterior. The bricks were coated in layers of gray paint, meant to hide the underlying graffiti that still managed to stay on the wall like ghosts. The splintered doorframe that housed the scratched up door was slightly crooked and didn't seem to close completely. The lit-up sign that read “Inktoxicate” flickered in a dull greenish-hue. Pierce reached for the door handle, his fingers twitching in anticipation.

He loved the feeling of the needle entering his skin. The pleasurable sting of the injections of ink, the soreness of a new piercing. It was his world. Some would call him a masochist. It was much more than that. He wanted to become real. He wanted the world to see him as he saw himself. He wanted the pain of reality and the scars to prove it. He wanted his body to be a living work of art. Pierce had numerous body modifications already. His left eyebrow, his bottom lip, and his ears were pierced. His arms and back held ancient Egyptian symbols and images of Gods.

The girl at the counter looked at him with dark eyes lined in green. “What can I do you for?” she asked with a smirk as her eyes traveled down his body.

“Art,” he responded as he met her eyes again. “I need something new. Something unique. Something that is me.”

The girl stood now and circled him. She snapped a piece a gum before asking, “What did you have in mind?”

Pierce smiled as his mind began to spin with thoughts of beauty and ancient powers. What indeed?
