Hello! I'm a kakapo! Never heard of one? Well, we are pretty obscure. Last I checked, there were only 201 of us birds left -- yikes! Normally, it's not at the front of my mind, though; we tend to be loners.

What makes me so special? Well, you see these big wings of mine? Actually, they aren't good for flying. No, I use my strong legs for getting around. I used to walk quite a distance every night through my island home in New Zealand in search of my favorite foods -- leaves, seeds, nectar, nuts, fruit, and more. This beak of mine can crack or grind it all open!

That life's been over for years, though. As much as I loved my island, it was getting dangerous. All sorts of rats and cats and goodness knows what else were coming out of the woodwork and trying to eat me! I have a strong bite, but I can't fly away from predators, and it would only be a matter of time until one got me. In the end, humans helped me leave for a safer place: Subeta.

Now I live with a team of Subetan researchers that protect me. They're really nice. Some of them even try to find me delicious food like I used to eat back in New Zealand. I have to be very careful when I go outside at night, but I can usually take one of my new friends with me to keep safe.

Maybe I can go home someday. That's my hope. But, I'm starting to enjoy the safety of Subeta, too! I've shown up on the internet to spread the word about my species, and I think I'm getting kinda popular. It's the least I can do to help.

Oh, are you wondering about my little friend? His name's Sirocco. I thought he looked so much like me that I just had to adopt him. Careful, though, he's a frisky little guy.
