Once Upon a Time...

Travelers are warned not to venture out, but sometimes curious visitors continue on only to return with horrifying accounts. Further inland past the marshy dunes there lies an old abandoned estate. Once a majestic structure, it has now spiraled down into decay. Vines have staked their claim in the spiraling columns, almost as if determined to show some sense of normalcy. However one wonders why local wildlife will not step foot on the property. Perhaps they can sense the evil that is afoot there that humans cannot?

An esteemed gentleman by the name Meuric had the house built around 200 years ago. A kind quiet man, he still carried with him a weight of sorrow. Those who knew his history knew that his wife and child had perished in a fire in another country. People wondered why he built such a large house for himself, but as they say money talks and people soon began to not concern themselves. He brought with him one item that they all marveled at...a mirror. It wasn't any plain mirror though. It had ornate gold designs encasing the structure. It must have cost a fortune and he brought it in with utmost care. Life continued on though, until the peaceful harmony was broken by a servants frantic cries in the main part of town.

The servant was a cook hired by Meuric. She told them that the other servants had fled as well. She described her masters descent into madness..all the while his growing refusal to eat and to spend his days gazing into that mirror. The servants weren't allowed in that room, but they always heard strange mutterings coming from inside. After not seeing their master for several days, one brave maid decided to enter the room. Once she stepped inside she saw the scorch marks on the walls, could see blood along the floor, and heard maniacal laughter. Looking towards where the sound was coming from, she realized it was coming from the mirror. Gazing in she saw a creature with red eyes gazing back at her. Terrified they all fled from that cursed estate.

The mayor disturbed by this began to gather several men to enter the residence and determine if her words were true. Upon entering the home, they felt a chill in the air and that strange laughter began to ring out again. Fearful for their lives, they all fled, but before they did one of the men noticed a journal on top of a desk. He grabbed it as they made their way quickly out of the building. After they had calmed down, he presented his findings to the mayor. Curious about what it could be, they all gathered around as the mayor began to read from the book...

December 23, 1886

I cannot stand it any longer. I hear my wife and childs cries every night. The fire has engulfed my mind and I can no longer withstand it anymore. I gaze at that cursed mirror every day, and my reflection gazes back at me. He beckons me closer and I find myself inching towards him with each passing day. I begin to have visions...visions of myself in that mirror with my wife and child. Happy together we live our lives and I realize that is what I desire more than anything. However I have seen the evil in my reflections eyes and I am determined tonight to destroy that mirror. Such a temptation no mortal should have to bear. I hear the whisper of the words soon...soon and I will do my best to put an end to all of this.

Strangely enough the journal ends here with what looks like claw marks that have raked through the remaining pages. They look back at the estate and notice odd shapes in the windows..almost as if other people are gazing back at them....
