I will be the light that shines in adversity...

Under construction!

I was always, always part of the background. I was just a maid, but I have a secret. I was also Queen Liliʻuokalani's best friend.

My mother was a palace maid. I used to sit in the kitchen while she helped make dinner and sing and dance to entertain her. She always told me that I learned to dance and sing before I could walk and talk. I reminded her of the mourning doves that perched in the trees and sang to the sun she said. One day I was helping her carry sheets to change the beds. I walked in front of her and turned to show her a dance that I had just made up. I smiled as my legs soared through the air, and she laughed lightly. We were turning a corner when I tripped on something and fell backwards. The sheets fluttered less than gracefully over my head as I hit the floor. I looked up to see Her Majesty the Queen. It was her gown that I had tripped over. My mother muttered her apologies right away, but I just lay there terrified. Queen Keohokalole stood still for a minute and glanced around, as if to check if someone was watching her. Assured that no one was around but us three, she bent down and picked me up so that I was standing on my feet again. All I could do was to stare at her.

She smiled and replied in answer to my mother's question, "I am unharmed, but I think your daughter should find a more practical use for her feet." She looked pensive for a moment. "I will tell you what. My Lydia is to start hula lessons next week. Why don't you join her? That way you can safely practice while learning a rich cultural tradition."

My mother tried to refuse, but the Queen insisted and told us that she would send for me. We both mumbled our thanks as she glided by, her smile replaced by her usual regal self.
